US Bank overdrafts are charged at $39.00 ea. In this instance a false balance showed on the ATM balance inquiry so two debit transactions for less than $6.00 were incurred. The balance showed was more than sufficient to cover the transactions. However, since the ATM was not current, this totaled two overdraft charges to the tune of $78.00. Since notification of these charges came to me via snail mail , and I was out of town for a week, an additional $8.00 per day was charged against my account as well. By the time I arrived home, the charges were $145.00 against less than $12.00 worth of transactions.

When confronted the bank forgave part of the per day charges making sure they told me how "generous" they were for doing that?

As everyone knows by now, the banking industry in this country is ripping everyone off for fees, services, document fees and account fees and our government is doing nothing about it. While the error was indeed mine the charges were ludicrous.

I encourage anyone banking with US bank, or any other bank doing business in the United States with similar policies, to close their accounts and bank through your local credit union or other reputable agency were you have a voice.

First and foremost, maintaining the balance in your account is your responsibility, not the banks. Second, the balance you got at the ATM was correct AT THE TIME. Obviously, more transactions took place on the account after you left the ATM. Third, USB offers TONS of ways to check your balance, so your "I was out of town" excuse is totally bogus. Also, USB offers TONS of overdraft protection items for a nominal fee. (My $500 credit line is totally free unless I use it, then it's just a few cents per day until I pay it back.). Fourth, credit unions charge fees too. I have no idea why you think they don't.

You ripped yourself off, so why don't you file a ROR on yourself instead?
