I don't know that this is just my bank because I hear it happening all over the United States, but I went to deposit money after visiting my account online and was told (in person) that I had 6 overdraft fees totaling $210!

After trying to compose myself I was told that all the card authorizations I had used a week ago came across all in one day - a week later! These had all been sitting in a "pending" status for a week?!

A payment I had made just one day prior via check had gone thru as an electronic check which they had never done before. Keep in mind this is yet another bank! So not only was I not informed of the electronic check but US Bank waited a week for all to be deposited.

Lesson learned here after paying the price of $210 - do not ever use any bank for any financial transactions unless you ask a million questions. They will never be willing to tell you! Why do banks constantly look for ways to charge the $35 to your account whether you are over by .01 or $100? Banking institutions should be called "Robbers!" They "rob" the average consumer more than a burglary and get away with it!

So..

AUTHOR: Robert - Irvine (U.S.A.)

What does your register say?

It appears you are suffering from a couple of problems of your own doing. First it does not appear that you keep a register, and you are relying on the "float". Neither of which is a good idea if you want to avoid overdraft fees.

If the money is not AVAILABLE in your account when you submit the payment, use your Debit Card or even write a check you have to figure you could overdraft. You can't beat money back to the bank no matter how hard you try.

So in this case.."A payment I had made just one day prior via check had gone thru as an electronic check which they had never done before."..You tried to use the "float" and got caught.

"...They "rob" the average consumer more than a burglary and get away with it!.."
- Wrong, the average consumer, in fact most consumers DO NOT overdraft their accounts. But if you really think you were robbed you need to file a police report.

Hopefully you really did learn a lesson and are more responsible with your accounts in the future.

Bank Did Not Rob You

AUTHOR: Jim - Anaheim (U.S.A.)

You robbed yourself. Checking online si WAY TOO LATE to find out you did't have money in your account. You need to keep a check register and stop looking online to see what your balance is. Also stop using your debit card like it's a toy - that toy just cost you $210.....is it worth it?

Also, the fact your items were pending for one week is also NOT the bank's fault; that would be the fault of the merchants who didn't put there charges through in time. The fact that it took a week to clear is also irrelevant because you would have been overdrafted when the charges were still pending.

All banks are the same - period. This one is no better or worse than any other bank.

#3 Consumer Suggestion

electronic checks

AUTHOR: Nancy - Steilacoom (U.S.A.)

Teller 21 and check21 have eliminated the "float". Before, if you wrote a check it had to be encoded in the proof department, by worker beas. Then if the check was drawn on another bank, it was physically dent to the other bank for processing. NOW the checks are imaged by the tellers and the checks are sent electronically, so there is not float. And the reason banks charge so mkuch for NSF is becasue they can (the Federal Reserve has not said they can't)
