I was so appalled by the unprofessional treatment I received on October 20th. On Thursday night October 20th I received a letter in the mail about my account. That was a discrepancy to what I had been told by the five other banker earlier that week. In fact because I have never had an over charge on my bank account before and an unexpected occurrence had happened with a company so I called to see what I could do to help the situation. I had called the bank on 10/16/00 the banker reassured me that all was ok and that the money went though with no problems and that amount to the other company was paid. But then I find out that on the 17th, completely different story. But this time I was told not to worry that the bank “paid” this account but I would be charged and over charge for $35.00 I called the other company with the charges company to see if they could back out of the payment and do it on another day but they refused to do so. When I called the bank back to tell then what I tried, I then got a complete different story now. Being confused about such differentness I asked the banker if I could talk to the department that is in charge of the overdraft fees, so they could finely straighten out all the different stories I had been hearing. So the banker transferred me over to the overdraft department (the banker called it that department) to talk to someone in fact they told me it was this simple. That they were going to charge me for an overdraft fee for the payment that was not in my account. They also reinsured me that this was paid and that I would be charged for that. Then on October 20, 2011 I receive a letter in the mail with a completely diffident? Now I am even more confused as to what is going on with my account. So this time to be really clear as to what is going on I called the bank and asked to speak to a supervisor to explain to me once and for all what the heck is going on? When he gets on the phone I have to put my phone several distances away because he is so loud. I had to ask him several times to please tone the phone down for which he never did. All I called for was just to get cleared up information. I could not believe how this phone called was handled so unprofessionally. He was so rude to me would not listen to me and was very mean and callous and said horrible things about me as if I was a common criminal. He talked to me as if he was a gangster on the streets trying to sell drugs or something for this I was shocked. When all I called for was just to get some information from a “supervisor”?? I have never been treated so unprofessionally like this? I don’t think he even looked at my account or even knew what he was talking about, and he said I was going to be charged $18.00 overcharge? The letters says $20.00 the other people say it was paid and I was going to be charged $35.00? He also said that you don’t have “overdraft” department when that was what I had been told by the last banker I talked to. He treated me like I was lying and said that they don’t have a department like that. He said that they have a collection department?? That really did not make sense this is a bank not a bill I am paying. He was very rude and mean to me about this. What is really going on with this Bank?

Without knowing exactly what was in the letter, it sounds like you are being told the same thing(but perhaps in different ways).  You didn't mention what type of payment it was, but based on what you wrote it seems as if it is a Check or an ACH Transactions so these comments are based on that.

When an ACH/Check is presented to the bank, the bank has two options.  They can return the check NSF, and charge you an NSF Fee, or pay it and charge you an Overdraft fee.  These fees are generally the same.

If they return it, the company you wrote the check on can charge you a returned check fee.  If this is something such as a payment and you are now late you would be charged a late fee as well as additional interest from the company you wrote the check to.  Not to mention that in some cases they could turn the check over to the District Attorney for collection.  Needless to say an NSF check can cause you quite a bit of trouble.

The second option, which is what it looks like they did, is to pay the check.  But as a result charge you a $35 Overdraft fee.  You are also required to get your account back out of the negative.  For example if you had $20 in your account and wrote a check for $50, they would pay the $50 check putting you negative $30 then with the $35 fee you are negative $65.  It is the $65 you would be required to put back in your account.  There is also what is known as an "Extended Overdraft Fee" which is added on after so many days you do not bring the account out of Overdraft.  So for example if your account remains in Overdraft for 5 days they may charge you an additional fee.

If you still don't understand I would strongly suggest that you take that letter and personally go into a branch and have them explain it to you.

That really did not make sense this is a bank not a bill I am paying.
- Actually if you don't bring the account out of overdraft it is not exactly a bill but it is a debt you owe.  If you fail to pay it after a certain amount of time they will close your account, turn you into ChexSystems(which makes it next to impossible to open another account for several years), and turn you over to a collection agency.

Oh and this is just about how every other bank works as well.
