This is a very sad case of someone de-faming one of the greatest people I've ever met.  Leo Stein saved my life!  And many other screwed up kids back in the 60's and 70's. He ran a ranch that took in boys that were abandoned or taken away from their parents and had spent time in mental hospitals and other "care" homes.  This was the place you went  if no one else would take you. Many of these kids were diagnosed schizophrenic, and had been shuffled around by social workers most of their lives.  Several could barely read, or had much education.

We worked in the vegetable gardens, swam in the pool, played ball games, and went to group sessions every day.  At the ranch, they didn't take your crazy crap!  This was not some sort of institution where ten men would run and hold down the wild kid.  -They made you take responsibility for your actions. 

All of us went out there as screwed up teenage boys who never took advice or went along with any program.  Leo and Ella saved many of these boys who were willing to take a chance and see that there was something more to life than anger.
After 30 plus years running the ranch, and hundreds of boys living there, 2 boys made up false accusations and told their social workers lies to leave the ranch, and then later attempted to extort money from the Steins through their insurance.
So the Steins retired, it was a hard 24 hour 7 day week job, with little or no thanks from the people they helped.

I was on Circle S Ranch in 1978. The Steins were great people for what they tried to do by saving kids who were lost. I was one of them. But I ran about 60 miles to get away from that place because Leo and Ella were both crazy. The ranch was a great place except for the sort of Jim Jones like shit Leo and Ella used to do to the kids. Maybe we know each other. Leo and Ella were both genius's in their own way but they were out of control at times. It was like psychological torture.

The man who said Stein's Ranch was a good place is a guy named Frank "Skip" Honsik.  Honsik's  Dad was a Doctor, and sent him out to The Ranch as a private placement, to get the kid out of his way.  Honsik was not a crazy kid, nor was he from a poor family.

Honsik was a kid of privelege, and was a really nice kid, who was brainwashed by the Steins.  Honsik was in Salome, Arizona in 1965!

His Dad Dr. Honsik was paying the Stein's $700.00 per month for his "therapy" $700.00 in 1965 is $10,000.00 a month  in today's money!

Dr. Honsik told the Stein's they were not to beat up the kid or he would pull him off, and take his $700.00 a month payment away.

Honsik was Stein's "pet", and did whatever he was told, and attending Salome High School, where he was the Manager of the Football team!

While a Ranch "resident", Honsik witnessed the beatings Steins gave the other kids, but Honsik has chosen to protect the Stein family, and refused to testify at the Stein's trial for child abuse, where they were found GUILTY and shut down by the State of Arizona.

SKip Honsik was a good kid. He was well liked at Salome High School, especially, by the football Coach Rhae Wease. Skip was a docile, effeminate boy, who was quiet and submissive. Skip did what Leo and Ella Stein told him to do, so he never took any beatings.  We researched the Court records, and by Leo, Ella and Les Stein's own testimony they slapped and punched most of the boys. However, they said they did it "for their own good".

It is too bad Skip is, to this day, brainwashed about the Stein's.
