I worked at McBride and Son, Inc. homes from April 2003 to November 2009 as a Project Manager (which is a fancy way to say middle management) and I can confirm that your report is completely accurate. While I worked there we were trained as managers to "do whatever it takes" to make the deal. Forget feelings, forget morals, we were literally trained in a classroom setting to lie, cheat, make false statements, and even yes- bait and switch.
The contract we used was designed by McBride's lawyers, and completely protects the seller (McBride) and once signed the buyer doesn't have a leg to stand on. We knew that. We would laugh about it in the lunchroom like a bunch of unethical used car salesmen. We would even be forced to falsify contracts by copying initials and signatures from one section and copying and placing them on other areas on contracts when those sections were refused to sign.
Also I'd like to mention the poor quality of the homes. We were instructed to use the cheapest forms of labor, including illegals to get the job done as cheaply as possible. We ordered the cheapest materials as well. Oftentimes we were required to bribe city inspectors and/or threaten them with lawsuits if the homes didn't pass inspection. We would get yelled at by the general manager and/or CEO if the bribe or legal threats didn't pan out. Oftentimes we would charge for options and not put them in (i.e. Tyvec Wrap, Pest Shield, etc. usually it was every option you can't see).
The turnover at the company is very high. We would promise sales people and laborers the world and give them next to nothing in return, other than what they could use to barely get by. We often used threats to motivate sales people (as instructed by upper management) to hit their goals, and all that did was backfire. Less than 10% of the workforce lasts more than a year.
I recommend EVERYONE who considers buying McBride knock on the doors of those in the neighborhood and you'll hear a laundry list of complaints and frustrations. Save your hard earned money, buy elsewhere!
In conclusion, I am ashamed of my time there. I would never recommend this builder to anyone looking for a new home, whether you want to spend under $100k or over a million. I have moved on and started my own homebuilding company and I look forward to years of honest, truthful success- which is the complete opposite ideals of McBride and Son, Inc. I just pray for forgiveness.
