The product in question is Bright Effects 40 watt replacement compact fluorescent bulbs carried by Lowes. I purchased two packages with two bulbs in each package.

Two problems. First, the screw-in bases are obviously not made to the correct standard specifications, as the bottom contact in the screw-in base would not make contact in 80% of the bulb sockets I tried them in and therefore would not work at all in these cases.

Second, the light output is not even close to the the light output of a standard 40 watt incandescent bulb for which it is designed to replace. A 40 watt incandescent is usually rated at about 450-500 lumens. I would estimate the light output of these at about 20-30% of a 40 watt incandescent bulb (i.e., 100-150 lumens). Therefore, it is useless in most applications. This also means that this bulb is significantly less energy efficient than other brands of compact fluorescents for a given light output.

don't expect too much

AUTHOR: Smackdown - Kansas City (U.S.A.)

I teach Building and Property Maintenance at a Tech school. I am pretty current on this technology.

Just a few helpful facts about the fluorescent compact bulbs. I know the government and manufacturers are pushing these, and that incandescent bulbs will cease being produced in a couple years.

1. These bulbs work the longest in situations where the bulb runs almost continuously and their life is greatly shortened if turned off/on a lot. ( I think the bulbs you bought are probably worse than average).

2. DO NOT use these bulbs in a totally enclosed light fixture unless this use is approved on the packaging.

3. These bulbs don't work very well as outside lighting in cold weather. Slow start.

4. Be careful how you clean up a broken compact/dispose of bulbs. They contain some mercury. (See the EPA guidelines for disposal).

There are more facts pertaining to these bulbs, I hope this helps.
