I signed up for Direct Tv in April 2009 as there was no other service available because believe me, I would have never chosen them if I had a choice.  But truly who lives without tv on a regular basis.  Firstly, they NEVER had my phone number correct and everytime I called I had to recall that they had my cell phone number as that is the only way they could look up my account.  Secondly, I knew the move was temporary and would have to pay the cancellation fee when the time came.  Ok...bite the bullet.  In August 2009, I called once to pay my account monthly bill with my debit card.  The charges came through twice in two different amounts within 2 days of each other.  I called to dispute the amounts and they had NO idea what they were talking about.  I had them on conference call with my bank, Chase, and no one could answer any of my questions nor the reason two charges came out in different amount even though I only owed one of the charges...the one I called and AUTHORIZED! They did verify I WAS NOT on auto pay or something of the sort. I received the charges reversed by my bank.

When the move time came Oct 11, 2009,  I called to cancel and inquire how much my final bill would be.  <Swallow> $380 but in doing the math it was about $1500 cheaper to have Comcast for the duration of the contract even with the cancellation fee.  So I canceled.  I asked if I were to be billed for this amount and was told yes.  HOWEVER, on 10/18/09, my checking account was debited by none other than Direct TV for a whopping $487. and cents. Unbeknownst to me, they say when you call to cancel, the contract states you will be billed by debit card even if the rep tells you differently like she did me.  I have called my bank, Chase, and disputed the unauthorized transaction and have called Direct TV for the recorded call that said it would be BILLED to me at the time of cancellation.

You have to write a letter to request the recorded conversation.  They say 10 business days but don't hold your breathe.  I am going to find everything way I can to report these rip-offs and make every one aware they will screw you over.

Stay tuned to the resolution of this as I am a disgruntled former client and am sick of companies like these who scerw over the little guy. I will not let this go. If I have to take this to the top, I will.

What did your contract state

AUTHOR: Stacey - Dallas (U.S.A.)

I have Directv and the contract I signed stated that if you cancelled within the 2 year period before it expired you were subject to a cancellation fee and you stated that you knew it therefore you are subject to pay that fee -

Next never EVER give a company your debit card because that is asking for trouble - get a bill and pay that bill with a check or money order so you can keep track of it

Good luck with Comcast - had them and had nothing but problems ie: reception issues, blackouts etc etc

Additionally

AUTHOR: Ashley - springfield (U.S.A.)

This is from directtv's customer contract:

(found on directv's website)

(e) Payment Upon Cancellation. You acknowledge that you have provided your credit or debit card account information to us. You understand that you will incur fees and charges as a result of your receipt and use of Service and/or Receiving Equipment, and may incur early cancellation fees and/or equipment non-return fees (as specified in any lease, programming or other service commitment agreement you entered into in connection with obtaining Receiving Equipment). By giving us your credit or debit card account information, you authorize us to apply this method of payment, in accordance with applicable law, to satisfy any and all amounts due upon cancellation. You further acknowledge that you are required to maintain current credit or debit card information with us and agree to notify us whenever there is a change in such information, such as a change in the card number or the expiration date.

So yes, when you signed the form when they installed your service, you did agree that they could charge this money to your debit card.

GET THEM GOOD

AUTHOR: Bonnie - butler (U.S.A.)

as for the comment above where they posted part of the contract...if direct tv cannot be honest...then why should the consumer.  if it were me...i'd change my card and not tell them...they lie, i lie...fair is fair.

as for complaining...FCC, FTC, BBB, attorney general for your state.

file complaints with them all.

then call thses law practices that are handling some of the class actions that are against DTV.

If its not for your state, they will give someone in your state or a lawyer that is handling a nationwide class action...which they are in the process of doing.  I left messages for the one in DC...if we all band together DTV WON'T STAND A CHANCE!

Good luck and I hope you file all the complaints and talk to the lawyers.

Above remarks

AUTHOR: Denise - (United States of America)

I signed up for direct tv for my daughter in no way did i sign a contract with them .

I asked Over and over and over eery time I spoke with them about it i was told every time that no i did NOT have a contract.

The lease was up in like 4 mkonths at the apt she was in .

So why in the world would I or anyone sign a lease contract for service for a year or longer when we knew we would not be there ?

It was not until I called to cancel the service an to get information on sending back the boxes that i heard of a contract or cancellation fee .

I asked them why i was being charged for a contract i didnt sign they informed me at that time YOU DO NOT HAVE TO SIGN CONTRACT with them . They told me that by hooking up service it was automatic .

That pretty much means they can tell you anything an everything to get you to hook up with them then tell you it was mistake or what have you and you still have to pay .

Well all the high an mighty folks that like to through contracts up in peoples faces on here shame on you .

o I might ad i gave them new adress to send this so called recovery pack for thier boxes and they sent them so they said to the other address .

I got an email on the 26th saying it was shipped on 21 st odd email take 30 seconds if that to get to someone i ran the track number no such package .

not only that if I had got the kit it would have only given me 2 days to get it back to them as they give you 7 days from day the ship kit to return to them or they charge your card no matter if it took 7 days to get to you .

my advise send back to them with out kit make them have to sign for it or get refuse slip from fedex

cancel and cards or checking account number you may have ever paid them with as they will use any an all to take out money i would do it before i ever called to cancel

and i wish all who use them the best of luck ytou will need it
