My company was contacted by Platinum Television Group sometime in October 2003. They told me that they are the producer of a TV show that appears on Tech TV, MSNBC and others. They wanted to interview me as an expert in my industry.

We are an internet based company providing business services and they wanted to interview me as the president of the company and feature us in their show. They said the show will have 3 companies featured. Each company will get 5-7 minutes airtime.

So after talking to me for about 10-15 minutes and explaining their process, they told me that there is a fee of about $20k for producing the show, which is passed on to me. Now at first this seemed to be an awful lot, so I told them that I would think about it.

I put a few days of thought into it and asked the company to send me some references and example clips. I contacted all the references and they were all happy with the results.

I viewed the movie clips provided by Platinum Television Group and they were all professionally done.

So where is the rip-off in all this??? Well I guess the $20k is the catch. They don't tell you about this up front. You have to consider your business model and do some research on your own. This is an awful lot of money, but for some companies it may be worth it.

My own company makes $10k-$15k profit on an average deal, so theoretically, if we got 2 clients out of this show we would make our money back. Well I have still not signed up with them, due to some financial reasons. However, I am pretty confident that for my own company this would be a worthwhile process and I am definitely planning on trying it out in the next 6 months.

I will come back here and post the results. So the final decision comes down to each company. This is basically TV advertising disguised.
