After becoming a member of AARP and seeing all the ads on how to save money on my car insurance. I decided to switch my insurance over saving myself over half of what I been paying.

When I called to buy the policy, I was asked if this was the only car in the household. I said no, my husband has his own vehicle. My car is in my name, my husband is in his name.

The representive told me they couldn't offer me coverage unless we insured all the vehicle in the household. I did discuss this with my husband he felt like he was being force to make a change.

I was told that this is the way they write insurance in Illinois. I feel this is not fair to me, I should be able to purchase a policy without changing everything over to them.

Most insurance company offer you discount to get your other business, not turn you down cold. I feel AARP should do something to change this way of doing business. Thank You.

#1 Consumer Suggestion

Insurance Requirements

AUTHOR: Wayne - Oklahoma City (U.S.A.)

As a lawyer, it makes complete sense to require someone to insure all vehicles with one company when two persons are legally married. If vehicles are insured by a couple with multiple companies (even under different names, if married), and a vehicle with lower limits is responsible for an accident, BOTH companies can be require to pay. If one company is only going to cover a maximum of 25K and the other has a limit of 100K, the first company will pay their 25K.. and the second company, unknowingly insuring the other vehicle, will have to pay the rest.

The law recognizes a couple as one entity, and insurance must do the same.

Another Thought

AUTHOR: Cory - San Antonio (U.S.A.)

MOST insurance companies give you a better rate if you have more then one vehicle insured by them at the same household and other types of insurance. Multiple car discounts. Though I've heard that AARP insurance isn't all it's cracked up to be. As I've mentioned before, one moron agent told me he could give me a better rate. Yeah he gave me a better rate alright, 25% less cost. The only problem was I'd have 75% less coverage. Instead of $100,000 worth of coverage, I'd have $25,000 worth. Talk about a rip.
