I am insured with AIG in Michigan. My wife had a rear end collision accident. It wasn't her fault. We had police report filed. It took me 32 days to get my car back after repairs. My insurance entitles me for 30 day car rental @ $30/day.

AIG now tells me:
After spending for rental cars, AIG now asks me to produce a receipt to claim the car rental reimbursement. My contract does not state any such requiremnets. George Malecki, Branch Manager of AIG at Lansing, says its 'common prodecdure' and they ask for it since they get audited. Am I expected to follow what he considers as common procedure that is not stated in the contract? Why didn't they state it clearly the day the accident was reported. Isn't the fact that my car is still in the workshop proof enough. Am I now expected to run around asking for receipts for every one I rented. I offered to show him credit card statements and they refused. I have a feeling these guys are siphoning money that belongs to the customer. They surely need to be audited

They told me to pay $250 deductible even though per terms, it was to be waived. Had I not protested they would've pockeed it.

Now they ask me to pay 'bettement' on replaced parts. They ask me to pay 50% betterment for replacing the rear wiper motor with a new one. What kind of betterment does a wiper motor replacement offer my vehicle. Does it increase the value of my vehicle. Can I sell my vehicle for more? In this case most repairs results in a betterment because generally parts are simply replaced, never repaired. What is the purpose of a comprehensive insurance if I am to pay a good % of my repair bill. I asked them to use a 41/2 yr. old part and they didn't, because they can't find one or don't care. Why should I pay? I feel cheated. The adjusuter Mr. Jim Frost of Crawford and Co. never returned my calls and 5 messages. And I couldn't believe a company this size does not have its own adjusters. They've contracted it out.

They also tried to palm off 75% betterment for replacing my damaged propeller shaft and coupling. My vehicle is 41/2 yrs old. Is this insurance or some kind of backyard scam.

The AIG claim center in Lansing is terrible. Seems like they run a flex hour/flex week operation out there and don't care much about service. Arrogance is a trademark. Rename them 'The Arrogance Insurance Group'

I want to sue these guys for extortion, indiffernce and for all the inconvenience caused. Also FYI, a few months back my rates increased $35/6 mth. a month after I negotoated new terms. When I called to find out why, they said 'Since pay out is greater than revenue, we have to cover the gap by increasing rates for every one in the state'. Wow! What is the risk in this business?

Please note: The address below is of their Clims office in Lansing, MI. It may be better if the matter is reported to AIG headquarters.

Practice banned

AUTHOR: Charles - Albuquerque ()

Betterment is a concept used in law that is usually used in real estate. It is now being used in the auto damage first party coverage, where the insurance company claims that the insured receives something "better" because it is new. It doesn't make sense, but usually the amounts are small and go unchallenged.

Texas, by court decision, followed by Insurance Regulation banned the practice. Other states regulated the practice by prohibiting "betterment" unless defined in the policy and the entire vehicle increased in value. One state (Ohio, I think) says the "betterment" deduction can not exceed $500.

Other states by law say that "betterment" applies to wear items only. The texas case was over the engine so it didn't make any difference there. Some insurance companies no longer apply "betterment" at all.

I have filed a class action against AIG over "betterment" in my state against. Hope this helps someone, but read your policy and check your states insurance regulations. Some lawyers say that if you argue with the adjuster long enough you may get them to forget the betterment. In my opinion, the insurance companies have taken the word which in certain circumstances is valid, and perverted its meaning and use.

Good Luck

No they will not pay and will give you the run around and go up on Insurance premiums whether it is your fault or not! First Class Insurance is one of their agents as well...
