My mom went to Carpet City in Rhinelander, Wi. and talked to a salesman, John, and asked him what type of padding should be installed over a floor with in floor heat (Hydronic). She was told that we need a certain type and that they would take care of it.

After the carpet and padding were installed, we discovered that the padding was incorrect. I found this out while in the process of trying to figure out why the home was not being heated correctly. An expert in the field of in floor heating stated that we had the wrong pad.

I contacted many different people and organizations related to carpeting and hydronic heat, and they all told me the same thing, we have the wrong pad.

Here is one of the statements about our pad:

You want to avoid prime urethane or bonded urethane pads. Those are the pads that look like a bunch of wood chips or color chunks bonded together. These pads are very light and "airy" -- air is a great insulator (which you DON'T want in a carpet pad), and will cause performance issues. On top of that, they tend to "offgas" and create a urethane odor

I then went back to Carpet City and showed "John" a piece of the pad that we have. He stated that it was the wrong type of pad and that it should never be installed over in floor heat, which confirms what others had told me. I did not tell John who I was and acted as if I was just a new customer.

My mom then went to the store at a later date and did the same thing. She talked to another salesman at this time, and was told the exact same thing that John had told me. My mom then had this salesman write on the back of his business card what he had told her.

I have tried to work something out with Carpet City, but they refuse, and are now putting the blame on Cornerstone Custom Builders since they built our new home
