PAYMENT TRUST SERVICES A nice check in the mail but close inspection shows it's VOID London Manitoba

The letter is a dead giveaway. There's no phone number, nor fax on the letterhead. In the body of the letter you're instructed to keep your reference number confidential.
The check ($2,970) that comes with the letter looks really good at first glance (these guys ARE good at what they do). However, I always make photocopies of things like checks that arrive in the mail. On the photocopy, the word VOID appears in two places on the check. Sure enough, a close inspection under strong light at the right angle shows the word VOID.
The phone number to call is in Manitoba (by the way -- according to the RCMP the number - - 204-962-7031 -- is a cell phone...might be interesting to call this number incessantly, just to eat up the guy's minutes).
Instead of calling that number, I called the RCMP. IF you get one of these, fax a copy of the letter and the check to:
Cpl. Phil Carver, RCMP -- 204-983-2004.
You might also want to call phonebusters at 888-495-8501 (they are compiling a database for the RCMP).
Take the letter, check, and the envelope to the post office and turn it over to the US Postal Inspection Service.
