I had an old money order I purchased approximately 2yrs. back I never used. I decided that instead of sitting in my desk that I should deposit the money back into my savings account. I didn't read the instructions or bother to read the flipside of the money order. I assumed that money orders were pretty much like checks and a reputable business such as Western Union was just that, reputable.
I realize my mistake and take responsibility for not reading the "fine print." My bank tried to put the funds into my account and Western Union apparently registered this as a "bad check." I called the 1-800 number and spoke with "Moses." He stated that the money order depreciated "by law." I asked, "State or Federal law?"
He didn't know the answer. He also stated that after 5 years, depending on the state, that the "state" would recover the funds. I spoke to his supervisor, "Gabriel." Gabriel stated that I didn't read the back side of the money order. It states that after 1yr. the money order looses 50 per month on the total value of the money order. I told him my bank charged me $35 for a bad check and I am out $10 on the value of the money order as well as the purchase price; I told him I was frustrated and not happy. I then thanked him for talking with me; he was polite.
I argue that even though it may be their policy, I should somehow recover the charges. I don't agree with the terms of the contract; I think they could improve on the service they provide.
As long as these terms continue, I recommend against using the service. Use personal checks if possible and PayPal. I hope they make amends to become competitive and regain my trust. Until then, twitter, blog, e-mail, my newsletter, and word of mouth...don't buy Western Union. Presently, I think it is a rip off.
