We went to a Home and Garden show in Newark, Ohio on March 28th, 2004. I went to a booth for Bafford Chiropractic, they were giving free massages and exrays of your spine. My husband and I both got them done.

We had an appointment on March 31, 2004 to get our massages done and when we went in we got exrays of our spines. That day we didn't get anything else done. On April 1, 2004 he had us come back in to read our results and when he was done he went right into the payment plans.

We both told him that we could not afford the payment and then he told us that Connie could help us out with that. He then adjusted our backs and put us on the massage table for 15 mins.

The doctor then told us that he needed the rest of our spine pictures. I asked if we had to pay and he said that it was included in the free package.

On april 2, 2004 We had another appointment. I called a head of time and told them that we would have to cancel the appointment because once again we could not afford it. On April 9, 2004 I recieved a letter stating that we owe them money of $170.00 for the services that we had done.

On June 1, 2004 I received a small claims complaint letter stating that we now owe them $221.00. I called the small claims department in Licking County and they told me that there was no claim on us. The lady asked us if we had a claim number? I said no.

There was no Judge signature, seal, Court date and no case number and that the small claim looked like a copy. The lady told me that the company shouldn't have that paper and that I should've got a supena from the court. Which we didn't get.

So if your ever at a home and garden show and they are there beware. Investigation is ongoing at this time.

BE CAREFUL it's your back.

Steps you should take

AUTHOR: Kristian - Long Beach (U.S.A.)

As a doctor of chiropractic, it saddens me to hear that a member of my profession did this to you. I hope that you will not judge us all by bad apples like this.

First of all, you should file a complaint with the chiropractic board in your state. Here in California, what he did constitutes false advertising and you are not responsible for the bill. This is a "bait and switch."

If a patient is invited in for a free service, and then the doctor decides to perform a different service on the patient for a fee, he must get prior consent from the patient to perform the service or he has no grounds to issue a bill.

So unless he told you something like this..."We've now concluded the free x rays and massage. At this time I recommend you receive these additional services for this cost," and you then agreed to it, you have nothing to worry about.

And the letter he sent to you is probably a form letter to make you think you are going to collections.

However, be sure to contact the state chiropractic board and association and get their help.

Best of luck!

Check http://www.quackwatch.com for ideas on Chiro

AUTHOR: Robert - Westcliffe (U.S.A.)

Chiropractic is, was, and has always will be a pseudo science, alternative way to temporarily make people feel better. Who hasn't had a massage and a 'manipulation' and felt good.

There is no science behind chiropractic. A true 'subluxation' is serious, generally involves major trauma, and can cause paralysis. Normal spines without trauma do not need 're-alignment' they are a flexible system intended to bend, flex and rotate.

Why is it that people never take their car to an 'alternative mechanic' but are willing to do so with their health. Health is scientific. Germ theory, wound healing, allergic reactions, radiology etc. Chiropractic is a hoax. Go to your doctor. If he is a DO, he may do manipulation, and that is a therapeutic measure in sports injury, strains, sprains, and so on. If you are told you have a subluxation, get copies of the xray and take them to a board certfied radiologist MD or DO and get a second cold reading without any input from the first chiropractor.

Good luck

Robert is misinformed

AUTHOR: Kristian - Long Beach (U.S.A.)

Robert, it is cleat that you are uninformed about current studies in peer reviewed MEDICAL journals that support the use of manipulation and chiropractic care for many conditions. You even state "who hasnt felt good" from an adjustment or massage...

You mention the word subluxation. Not all chiropractors talk about the subluxation or focus on treating that. In my practice, I work with 6 area sports teams and treat everything from ankles and knees to shoulders and carpal tunnel, in addition to the regular back strains.

We use the same techniques that world class athletes like Lance Armstrong, Tiger Woods, the NY Jets, the KC Chiefs and many more use. This includes chiropractic treatment in conjunction with cold laser therapy and neuromuscular reeducation tehniques. If you want to see the research behind these methods, go to Erchonia.com. These methods have FDA approval.

Additionally, pro athletes use what works to get them better fast and into top performance levels quickly.

I think if you check out this info you will be surprised at how far chiropractic has come since its early days. I agree with you that in the early days it was psuedo science as I think the Palmers were definitely way out there, but things are different now. Please look these up and see for yourself.

Bafford Chiroprictic Cleared of Any Wrong doing by the Ohio Board of Chiropractors and by the Better Business Bureau.

AUTHOR: Jon - Newark (U.S.A.)

This is a case where two people changed their minds for chiropractic care after receiving treatment.

These two patients were billed for treatment they received in our office. These services were not billed on the same day when they received their complimentary exam and x-rays.

These two patients signed their names three times on different agreements for their care and their treatment plan. They even gave us their checking account information and signature to have their payments directly deposited once a month for their care. In other words, these patients gave us agreement to treat.

When they decided to discontinue their care the next day, they were billed for the treatment that they recieved the previous day. They received 3 letters from us, and not once did they try to contact us.

We were notified by the Better Buisness Buerea and by our board where we handed over all our documents.

After review, We were cleared of any wrong doing by both our board and by the Better Business Bureau.

What can you do?

Good to hear both sides

AUTHOR: Jason - San Diego (U.S.A.)

I am glad that you were able to clear it. They did paint an ugly picture of you and your practice. I am sure it is a lot of stress relieved over such a small dispute. Thank you for coming on and giving your side of the story.

The Chiropractor

AUTHOR: Adam - Royal Palm Beach (U.S.A.)

The Chiropractor has less education than someone in physical therapy, we need to Educate America why people become Chiropractors "to become rich" correct, it is the falsehood that Chiropractors are Doctors. Many Americans believe when we see MD that the Chiropractor is a real doctor. Chiropractors provide a service to temporarily relieve pain but what they do is they tell their customers to come in 3-4 times a week. That is vital for them to come in A.S.A.P or they will get worse.

the ARRT basically the XRAY Federal Laws believe that Chiropractors should not be authorized to take xrays that they did not pass the ARRT Board but Chiro-practors take xrays but the problem is the xrays dont show soft tissue, so if you have a muscle problem, pinched nerve what good is an xray? that is what Cat-scans are for and MRI's. So for examply billy bob gets into an accident he goes to a chiropractor who takes an xray... and tells him he needs to get his neck and back worked on for a year and tells him he needs to come on 4 times a week. Yet the Chiropractor cracks his back and neck doing more damage to the neck and back by adjusting it. Because if Billy took an MRI he would of known that he is so bulging discs in his neck and that the Chiropractor should not be cracking it!

An xray tech does not become an xray tech to become rich! They do it because they enjoy helping other people. A Chiropractor looks at you and thinks how can I make money from you! Big difference, A Chiropractor usually makes more than a Real family practice doctor. The doctor has ten times more training and education than the chiropractor. Chiropractors are like used car salesman that look at you as a source of money.. no one questions a doctor... well Chiropractors arent but we think they are! Okay Mr. Smith I cracked youir back that will be 100 dollars sir! cash or credit card?

Chiropractic education

AUTHOR: Mattk - Boca Raton (U.S.A.)

I am a Chiropractor and I dont understand how someone can say I have less education than a physical therapist. I had an undergraduate degree and a Master's degree before I did 4 years of chiropractic college. A physical therapist has a Master's degree at best and needs a referral from a doctor before a patient can go to them for treatment. Patients can come to me right away because I am listed as a primary care physician. I think people should be educated on how much education a chiropractor really has.
