Qwest - Afni sent a bill to collections from 2002 that I was not aware of Bloomington Illinois

I received a letter dated 10/24/2008 from this collections company Afni, Inc. stating that I owe Qwest $100.60. I called Afni and told them I have no idea what this bill is for. Back in 2002 I did have Qwest phone service and to my knowledge when I moved everything was paid off. When I moved to my new place I had Qwest again and when I re-connected service there was no mention of a past due bill of $100.60. I called Afni to ask them what this bill was for and they said they would fax me what Qwest provided them. That was 3 hours ago...still no fax. It's very strange to get this collection notice out of no where for $100.60 and there is no mention of it on my credit reports, especially for something that is a six year old bill. I almost feel like it's a scam...I really don't know what to do. Even though it's not on my credit history the Rep at Afni bascially said that they haven't made a submission to the credit bureaus on this account yet and I'm thinking to myself well if it's six years old shouldn't you have done that a long time ago? Any ways they also added that if I pay it they won't report it on my credit history. I'm afraid I'm giving these people (Afni, Inc.) my hard earned money and this is not legitmate.
