I got a letter from AFNI Collections. Here is what you do, it worked just fine for me. Go here and copy and paste the letter to MS word.

Put your info in at the top and then the account # on your letter. I did not even include a copy of the letter they sent me. Sign it and sent it return receipt. It cost me about $5 but it was worth it. I got a letter back and they said based on their investigation the account has been closed and will take no further collection action. If it has been reported to my credit report it will be removed in 60 days. Keep this letter for you records so on and so forth. It was all very simple and they back right down and actually apologized. Then you file a complaint with the FTC and your State Attorney General. It's important to do that. The more complaints the more they are taken to court.
