American Agencies ripoff, adding fraudulent charges to my account. San Diego California

Back in 2000 I owed pac bell $513.00 on my account. My account was sent to american agencies, and now 2006, according to them I owe $991.00.
When I called them they weren't specific on why I owe more than the original amount. First they said that pac bell was still adding charges and that they were just representing the company. I don't know what to do.

Number 1, if you haven't paid a collection agency anything, DON'T START.
What they are doing is adding 'interest and penalties' to the bill, which is illegal.
Now, your first option is to let it slide, since the statute of limitations has or will run out very shortly. However, if you want to do the right thing and pay the bill, contact Pac Bel directly and pay it. DO NOT PAY THE COLLECTION AGENCY, or give them ANY personal info!!!!!
