CHECK PROCESSING BUREAU Threatening letter scared me and I almost fell for it New York New York

I also received a letter starting "YOU ARE HEREBY ADVISED of your issuance of the...." and ends with the Threading sentence " THE CHOICE IS YOURS. You can avoid the possibility of the aforementioned criminal and / or civil action only with an immediate payment." from them.

The letter had a name of a store in a city where I used to live 8 years ago.
They claim that I owe them $211.00. Since it had a familiar local store name from 8 years ago, I got scared and I went to a post office and sent them a check in Certified mail. I even added return receipt for it.

I googled the company and came across this page and several BBB pages about this scam, so I immediately stop payment for the check. That was close! I should have googled them first but I was just really scared. I am still concern about where they obtain the information about me. My current name and address. The name of local store in a city where I used to live.

Thanks to this site I only have to pay fee for the stop payment on the check which is $20.00. It is a lot better than $211.00 which I need for my young children.
