I have received numerous calls from the "United Legal" company.  The accents are Nigerian or Indian.  Usually male, only once a woman.  They always say the exact same thing.  They threaten me with such comments as the cops will come to your house, your social security card will be "locked up", you will be in serious trouble, you must respond or we will take legal action, have your attorney call ours.

They even called me at work!  They are obviously frauds.  Just their comments alone suggest that, but their rudeness and intimidation tricks are not something you would expect from a collection agency.  They are way over the top.  My concern is that they are harrassing me at work and scaring the secretaries.  Not sure how to handle that.  I have told them about this company being a fraud, but it is unnerving for anyone listening to them.

They started calling me July 8th and it is now August 17th.  I was hoping by ignoring them they would go away.  They claim to be located in New York.  But their phone numbers come from a variety of area codes.  I have kept their voice mails just in case I have an opportunity to help an agency catch these idiots.  I just pray that no one falls for their scheme and gives them money or information that ruins their families.

Provide these Frauds something in Writing

AUTHOR: Tony - Richmond (USA)

How do you know when a Collection Agency is Lying?  When their lips are moving.  They are swamp scum!  Why you may ask?  Because they violate Federal Law Every day!  Simple!  Send them a certified Letter in Writing telling them that they will not contact your place of employment or home via phone anymore.  If they continue tell them that you will report them to the FTC and the Attorney General's Office.  Then tell them that you will sue them for 20 Million Dollars, which will work out, because you always wanted to own a Collection Agency.  Do not give them your checking account information or Credit Card Information.  They will clean you out.  Makesure before you make any deal with them that they either fax, or email you a letter in writing.  Don't take their word for it.  They're thugs and crooks, that use intimidation and embarressment to their advantage.  If you owe them money, offer them a settlement.  Sounds like they bought this debt on pennies on the dollar.  Offer them 25% of what you owe and makesure you get it in writing first.  Send them a check or money order. This is legal and it's called a settlement.

Tony is essentially correct

AUTHOR: ReactorCore - Victoria (Canada)

There's something called the "Fair Debt Collection Act" (Google it), and from what you're saying, they're breaking the Act in a major way. For example, they are NOT allowed to contact you at the workplace, they are not allowed to threten you with actions such as sending the cops to your door, etc.

Scumbags like this prey on people's ignorance of the Act, hoping that zpeople have not armed themselves with information.

As Tony indicated, you can send them a written "cease and desist" order to stop the phone calls, indicating in the letter that any further contact of this type will be seen as harassment and will be acted on in the legal arena.

There are also templates available online for the cease and desist letter. Just copy, paste and adjust the language in it to suit your particular issue.
