A surprise showed up on my glowing credit report. West Asset Management says I owe $403 for an unpaid Sprint bill. I never had an account with Sprint. Sprint won't give me any information, just refers me to the collection agency. The collection agency has all my information. Even the address is correct, but I never ever got a notice from them or from Sprint. The customer service rep said she couls settle the debt for about half what is owed. She told me that it would remove it from my credit report. She also said that I would get my money back after my dispute is successful. I'm sure her first statement is a lie and the second statement: I'll never see my money. Because they have all my correct information they insist it's my debt.

Karen,
You did good so far using common sense, but stay off the phone! NEVER call, or speak to any third party debt collector. It will never produce positive results for you, and will usually make your situation worse.
These are usually "junk debt buyers" you are dealing with. They buy these types of very old, usually uncollectable "debts" for less than a penny on the dollar. Usually, they cannot validate the debt upon your request. They know this, that is why they harass you on the phone and try to get you to make evne a small payment which would validate the debt and restart the SOL for collections.
NEVER pay or even discuss a payment arrangement with a third party debt collector! Stay off the phone!!
Always communicate in writing only, and via certified mail, return reciept requested.
Be sure to put the cerified# on the letter itself to match the number on the envelope label. NEVER sign anything that goes to any collector. Just print. Otherwise your "signature" could end up on a "contract".
Now, by the means above, send a dispute to each affected credit bureau. Be very short. Dispute for reason "no my account" and in that letter demand to see any communications used in the processing of your dispute.
Also, by the means above send a letter of dispute to the bottomfeeders involved. Clearly dispute the debt in its entirety and demand all communications be only in writing, no phone calls. Also demand to see something with your signature on it that created the alleged debt. Also demand a full itemization of charges and a full account history. And also demand to see proof that they are legally entitled to collect on said debt and that they are licensed in your state to do debt collections.
Now, until this debt is properly validated, all collections efforts must cease, by law. This includes negative credit reporting.
When they violate your legal request, or other rights under the FDCPA and/or FCRA, you sue them. It's easy money!
And, you can sue them for the damage they did to your credit score, and for all costs involved in fighting it. keep records of all expenses including your time, so you can at least make them pay that.
Don't get mad, get paid!!
Good luck!
