OK here is my story. I was rushed into attending the Kaplan University online program by the enrolment team. Classes began the next week and they wanted me enrolled to start them. All was good in the beginning. I started class on Feb. 25, 2009. I applied for federal student aid along with the Stanford subsidized and unsubsidized loan. I filled out all the information for the 08/09 FASFA and submitted it. FASFA contacted me back saying that based on my income I qualify for the max amount of assistance. Then the trouble began!
The financial aid department contacted me to say I was selected for review.? They needed the 08/09 verification FASFA worksheet, my 2007 signed tax return and my W2's for that year. I faxed these documents in and continued on my way. In march I filled out the FASFA again for the 09/10 year. Guess what, I was selected again for review. In April, I was contacted by the financial aid department that I was blocked from attending classes due to missing documents? WHAT? They never received the W2's that I faxed to them on March 2, 2009? OK, if they never received it why did they not contact me back then for it again? And I have missing documents for the 09/10 FASFA.
Now they want documents for both 08/09 and 09/10 FASFA since things kept disappearing out of my file. OK, we are assigned a financial aid officer to contact in case of problems. Let me assure you I was contacting her.
In July I was blocked from classes again for missing documents. I had to fix both FASFA's and resubmit them (I was told to omit information on my 09/10 FASFA form so I could get the federal aid by the document specialist. Isn't this illegal?). It is now August and neither ones have been approved. My financial aid officer refuses to contact me regarding these issues and this is the short version. There is allot more to this story!! My battle is just beginning. The next round of classes start in October. I applied for another student loan and since my 09/10 FASFA has not been processed Discover Loans can not approve it. They are waiting for Kaplan to give them the heads up. Yea, good luck with that. It looks like I will be dropping out before the next round of classes in October. What fresh hell will be waiting for me I don't know.
On checking my student financial account at the schools web site it states that I was approved for the federal student aid and how much I am to receive. With the total from that and my discover loan I have a balance that is owed to me in the sum of $1990.00, anyone want to bet I will receive it.
I wish I came across this site sooner and I also found another site of complaints against Kaplan University online. Just google Kaplan University reviews.
