I recently attended on line school at Kaplan University from March 2007 through November 2008. I finished classes and called the school in January of 2009 because I had not received my diploma. I spoke to a representative of the financial aid department and found out that I owe the school $8334, which was supposed to be covered by my CitiAssist student loan through Citibank. The financial aid department suggested that I contact the organization that I have my student loan though, which is Citibank.
I called Citibank and they told me that the loans were ready for disbursement in July of 2008 and September of 2008, but the school never approved the loan, so the money just sat there and was never applied to my tuition.
I spoke to Kaplan representative from the financial aid and student account departments on a few occasions and none of their representatives could give me a reason why the school never accepted the loan money and why I was allowed to attend school from April 2008 through November 2008 when the tuition was not paid. No one from Kaplan ever notified me that there was a problem with my student loans. The student accounts department at Kaplan calls me every day to collect a payment and I have been reluctant to pay on a debt that I do not understand.
Finally, I talked to a representative from the financial aid department at Kaplan who noticed that the school had tried to cancel a scheduled disbursement from Citibank in December, but accidentally canceled my disbursement amounts for July 2008 and September 2008. Citibank does not offer loans for Kaplan University students anymore and people that are no longer current students do not qualify for student loans.
One more catch....I filed for bankruptcy on November 3, 2008 and this is keeping me from getting a personal loan to pay off a portion of tuition that should have been paid off in the first place. The portion of tuition that was not covered was previous to the bankruptcy, but Citibank has canceled my old loan status and will no longer grant me a loan due to the bankruptcy. I have been left with a dept that I cannot pay and no diploma to show for my hard work.
