Kaplan University It is true regarding the complaints of Kaplan University. The professors are wonderful, however the departments that promised to give support with continued education are very rude, they scream and yell Fort Lauderdale, Florida

I have been a student with Kaplan University since 2008. As others have said, it seemed like the best college to attend, especially on line. I was promised full support until I graduated. The representatives are very rude, they disconnect your call, if you get to a supervisor they never get back to you. The professors are excellent. That is why I do not understand why departments such as Financial Aid, Student Accounts, and Financial Aid Loan Counseling can be allowed to treat students so mean and cruel. I have a GPA of 3.96 and have made the Dean's List many times over. Despite my hard studies and diligence I am treated like dirt by these departments. And I have not found a way of contacting the President of the University either. I wonder why? I have approximately 10 months to finish my degree and have been cut off from any help from Kaplan University to obtain my degree. However before enrollment one is assured that everything possible will be done to obtain a degree. Also it is true regarding the text books. They are published by Kaplan and therefore cannot be re-sold. I loved my on line education however Kaplan has torn me down from obtaining my degree. I would have to start all over again and pay another college. Who can do that in this economy?

sooo true

AUTHOR: gelswifey79 - warren (Virgin Islands (US))

I have recently graduated from here in 2010 august to be exact, this school is a joke and they take advantage of some, the problems that I have had were getting hung up on, getting yelled at and promised a ascholarship, that I have never received. The fin.aid people just seem to not care, we all need to do something.

So true, Kaplan employees difficult

AUTHOR: Tb - Orlando (U.S.A.)

I read your report with interest, being an ex-employee. It was the most unprofessional terrible employment experience I have had in 30 years.  The employees in FA, Student Accounts, etc. don't really care what your GPA is.

Since Kaplan in my area fires over 60 employees a month (113% turnover in the first six months of 2010), I can only guess that they are doubling and tripling up on workload.  That said, it still does not give an employee the right to ignore you or treat you poorly.  I can only suggest that you contact Greg Marino, COO by mail - return receipt requested. (He's in the Fort Lauderdale office).  You might also try Andy Rosen, President (New York).   And don't forget to tell him that if you don't get what you need, you will be contacting an attorney: that's the only way to get their attention. Good luck!

Another suggestion

AUTHOR: Jeanski - Buffalo (USA)

Another suggestion might be to encourage everyone you know who is thinking about going to college to read through the ROR and research their school carefully before applying.  The only way to stop the for-profit schools from gouging students to is get them where it hurts - their profits!

Almost every traditional school has an online program designed for students who cannot attend regular classes.  A land-based school in your community will be far cheaper and have personnel who really do care about your education.  Contacting the President of the school will not help. Yours is one of many complaints and he hasn't done anything yet, has he?

GPA Ripoff

AUTHOR: John - Memphis (U.S.A.)

I always notice that the for-profit students who are carrying a nice 3.96 or 4.0 GPA through their studies haven't realized that in a real college they would likely have a Phi Beta Kappa key and real scholarship money for very reduced or FREE tuition. They would likely have free ride in grad school as well if they so desired. Like I said, that's in a REAL college. IMO, Kaplan ain't it.

IMO, the high GPAs are used as a marketing tool to keep the student in the for-profit school. Why? For more profit. Keeping many students in the high GPAs keeps the money flowing big time. How is this done? Keep in mind that in order to maximize attendance and retention the instructors must gear their class to the LOWEST denominators in the class. Therefore your more adept students do fantastically well while the low perfomers just pass (and keep paying tuition). Unfortunately, employers realize this too and automatically discount high GPAs from these schools. Honestly, who do you think an employer will favor, a Kaplan grad with a 4.0 or a real university grad with a 3.0? Your placement department would rather you didn't know.

Are the Kaplan grads landing basic entry level jobs? Ask around, you'll be surprised. If you want the real scoop just call the HR departments at major companies in your area and ask them directly if they give a lot of weight to for-profit school degrees. Ask them if going to a local community college would be a better approach.
