As a recent college graduate, like most people in this world, I have had extreem hardship with trying to find a job. At the last minute, I was able to find a job; however, everybody in my household is currently laid off. I am the head of household. I am barely getting by to pay for the basics. I was told about the forbearance program. I called Sallie Mae to apply. They told me I would have to pay $50 per loan for a forbearance for up to 6 months at a time.

If I don't have the money to pay the bill, what makes you think I have the money to pay this fee - That you have to pay the same day as you call or else the loan goes on your credit as being defaulted.

Please keep in mind, I have NEVER signed anything that says that I will have to pay this fee. Nor would the company send anything to me in writing indicating this fee. Furthermore, it is not on their website that this is the process for forbearance.

I used to work for Sallie Mae as a collector. I was the one charging these fees which I thought myself was ridiculous. Anyway, the way it works is you do have to pay $50 per loan but they can't charge you more than $150. If you have 3 or 10 loans it will be $150. If you have government funded loans those are free. Sallie Mae will let you post date a check for your fees usually up to 30 days. Also ask about "bucketing" you fee. Sometimes, on a case by case basis they will let you pay your fee with your next scheduled payment. You usually have to be at least 60 days past due before they will let you do this. They will let you do this only one time EVER though. I hope this info helps. Sometimes inside info is always good!
