I have been doing to u of p for almost a year now and finally got tired of their crap like many of the people on here they have done the same things to me although the latest is I have currently enrolled in a new college online I sent both of my counslors a email telling them I am terminating my classes here at UofP that was over 2 weeks ago well last night I get a email from my finacial aid advisor to call him immedatly that it has to do with my finacial aid, so i call him and he starts to tell me that if I stop going to UofP that I will have to pay my lender 2080.00 and that will be right away I ask him why and said I am changing schools not lenders so what does that have to do with anything he proceeded to tell me that because I am unenrolling from UofP all of my funds(which they already have for the year) will sent back and because I already recieved my pell grant and excess F/A I will hav to send those back as well. I asked him how I would go about not having to pay all of this back he told me That if I stay at U of P I will not have to pay these things back..lol..right then it was a red flag for me so I called my new college and told them everything he told me they laughed and said that this was not the first time Uof P has done this to a new student transfering over to them. So I called UofP back he told me the Excess F/A money they sent me was for me to pay for my next classes I asked him why this was he said because on your new FASFA forms you put down you wanted to handle your own funds which was funny because I never changed anything on my FASFA it was the same as it was when I first did it and they handled all of my funds from day one all I did was resubmit my FASFA I did not change a thing so now they want that money back for classes i did not even take..lol..At the end of our conversation he started to tell me that if I go to this new college I will have what is over lapping loans and this is because all of my funds for the year have been sent to UofP already and Finacial aid will not pay for me to go to a new college so it will not cover my full year at the new college. So I called the new college and talked to the student manager and he told me it was because UofP do not want to release my funds to the new school which they have now choice but UofP told me this to keep me there. What kind of education is this if they cared about our educations then they would not be trying to screw the students who give them their hard earned money to go there and get a so called degree... As I read all of your stories about what UofP has done to all of you it really pisses me off..There has to be something that us students can do to stop this scam that UofP is doing to all of us innocient people..so if you know anything that i could do personally please let me know....Thank You Fellow Students

Re: Overlapping Loans

AUTHOR: Gocards - Tempe (U.S.A.)

Azgirl,

I'm sorry to hear about your troubles with the University of Phoenix. I've had some friends go there...some liked it, others had really bad experiences. But, you might want to double-check with your new school about what the other advisor said about overlapping loans. If you already had loans out, and they were sent to the other school, you might not be eligible for all of your aid. One of my friends switched schools mid-year, and he had already used financial aid and gotten a pell grant. He ended up having a BIG out of pocket from the other school...where are you going now? How much is tuition?

Trainer for Financial Aid - Wanted to Let You Know Important Information

AUTHOR: Miranda - New York (U.S.A.)

Hello, Azgirl. I saw your report on University of Phoenix, and after reading it I felt that I needed to respond to let you know some important information. I am a trainer for Financial Aid regulations and have been for quite awhile. I just want to let you know that the counselor you spoke to at UoP is correct regarding your Financial Aid and how it is not able to be transferred to another school. The reason why is because of your academic year and the cycle that the Department of Education requires (this is the government entity that regulates all Financial Aid processes). You must complete 24 credits with a passing score in all classes (this is normally 8 classes at 3 credits a piece) in addition to 30 weeks of instructional time with passing scores in those classes. If you have not completed 24 credits and 30 classes with a passing score, which it sounds like that is the case in one form or another, then you will end up in the exact situation that your counselor described. I'm not sure who you spoke with at your new school (and congratulations on finding one that you are happy with), but they would be misinformed when discussing a release of funds not being allowed by UoP. That is a regulation mandated by the Department of Education that all colleges must follow in relation to your funds being sent back to the lender due to the transfer of schools, so UoP is following federal regulation. You will end up having to pay back the funds that were not used in classes where you gained passing grades, if there are any, upon your transfer to the new school. I just thought that you should know this information is actually true as it sounds like someone at your new college is misinformed and could land you in some hot water because of it. I wish you the best with finishing up your degree, and best of luck with things.

I Forgot to Mention....

AUTHOR: Miranda - New York (U.S.A.)

What you can do to be on the safe side with your loans is to pull your student loan report from the National Student Loan Data System. The website to do this is www.nslds.ed.gov. That report will show your loan period, how many funds have been disbursed and are still available to be disbursed, and what your current status is for each loan. You can determine how many funds you still have available to use for classes at your new school (you'll have to get certified again after revising and resubmitting your FAFSA under the new school code, so be prepared for some waiting time), and you can also see when you will be eligible to apply for additional funds based on the end date for your loan period. It sounds like you already have one disbursement considering the advice given by your UoP counselor, so hopefully you are close to halfway through your aid year; otherwise if you're in the beginning of it or have failed classes, you will probably have a large out of pocket cost with your new school since the likelihood of Financial Aid covering everything there in that case is slim to nil with most college expenses nowadays. Good luck with everything. I hope your situation turns out for the best, and you have a wonderful experience at your new institution.
