Canon Creative printer ripoff Internet

My son bought a computer "package", a few months ago. He had to move and left the computer with me. There was a Canon Pixma Ip 1700 printer with it, but it has no USB cord that connects the printer to the computer. When I contacted the company, through email, they were like "oh well, we don't care." Their philosophy was that everyone has a connecting cord from their previous printer, which is very idiotic. (And, strangely enough, there are directions on how to connect this USB cord! Now how would they know what cord anyone has to begin with?)
Apparently, Canon has a history of doing this new ripoff, since others have reported they didn't get a cord with their Canon printer's. It includes all Canon printers now, apparently. Canon's trying to double their money! They may "throw in" a printer in a computer package, for a reduced cost, only to have it cost the customer more in the long run when they have to run out and buy an expensive cord.
I'm wondering why the government doesn't protect consumers from these tactics. How is it they can get away with it? My advice is for everyone to avoid Canon like the plague that they are. They use to be a good company. Not now!
