My Sony laptop fan failed. I took it into Best Buy, since I bought it there. It was still under warranty, so they logged it in. They told me that Sony would probably replace the hard drive, so I should back up anything on the computer. I asked if it was secure, because I had photos I had not yet backed up on the machine. He told me yes, everything would be backed up on their server, for $99. He assured me that my photos and data would be safe. So, hesitantly, I chose to go with it, since I had about 4,000 pictures in RAW format on the machine.

Sony called me 3 weeks later and said that the hard drive was not performing optimally, and was failing their tests. They asked me if I had my information backed up, and I said yes. He said good, because we do not do backups here, and we will be replacing your hard drive for you.

Last week, Geek Squad called and said my computer was ready. I was 5 minutes away, so I stopped in. He showed me the computer, and I noticed it was new. He said, yes, Sony had replaced almost everything. As we opened it, I asked if all the data had been restored. He looked at me and hesitated. He said, we don't have the DVD's for that. I said well, I paid you $99 to backup and transfer all of my data. He looked at my file, and informed me that it had been checked in wrong, and he would still need to put all of my data back on the computer. He asked me again if I had paid for the service, I was beginning to get concerned. He said he needed to keep it for two more days while he put all of the data back on my machine.

It is now two days later, and I have not heard back from GS, so I called. The representative on the phone informed me that he was the one that had checked the machine in. He informed me that the hard drive had gone completely bad, and that NONE of my data had been retrievable, and that they would be refunding my $99.00.

At this point I flipped out, and yelled how unacceptable that was. If the data was un-retrievable, why hadn't he called me and informed me. He said that he was sorry, but there was nothing he could do. I said that my hard drive had been fine. When I dropped it off, we started the computer with NO ISSUES, except the fan was not going. ALL of my photographs and documents were there.

At this point I have spoken with a GS manager, and a store manager. They said they would try and retrieve my old hard drive from Sony on Monday.

I cannot believe that I trusted them to keep my information safe, and they DESTROYED it. I am LIVID, SHOCKED, AND IN TOTAL DISBELIEF!!!
