I got a call today that was a pre-recorded message that my grandmother answered and didn't get the number, so I got the incoming number off of the caller ID and I called it. It was (716) 650-6240. I asked where I was calling and they said a collection agency and they transferred me to the proper department once I gave them my phone number. It was for this old FCNB account that I originally owed about $300 on and it is now up to $809.
I was advised by three different attorneys not to pay this and that what they are doing is illegal. I tried to talk to the guy on the phone and he kept interrupting me. I finally said "You can listen to me or not" and he said "I won't" and hung up on me. I called back and asked for a manager or a supervisor. This hack of a guy gets on the phone and says he is one of the high-ups, he has a lot of power. He says "who do you want to talk to?" I tell him someone that can handle situations. He says he can, who do I want fired? I tell him I just want someone to talk to me in a professional manner and not hang up on me. So I go through this whole thing with him telling him I am not paying them $800 and that I was advised by an attorney not to. So he says he'll note my account that I refuse to pay. I told him I owed some but not that they are saying I owe. He then puts me on hold and comes back and tells me he had a conference call and I can pay $425. I tell him I can't do that today, and he says no deal then.
So then he finally says well I can call back when I can pay it and they'll see whether they'll accept it or not. I told him at one point that he could sue me and it would be interesting to get this in front of a judge and he did not respond. I work in an attorney's office and I know that if this were a legitimate collection agency, they would have already sued me and they wouldn't back down at the mention of court. Any time I made any comment about them suing me, he did not pursue that course. I think they are a scam and I don't know how to get it off the credit report, but someone needs to do something, these people are not valid.
