Shell/Texaco Credit Card ripoff Des Moines Iowa

I received a renewal for credit card for Shell/Texaco. I hadn't use the card but one time over a year ago and did not want to keep it. I sent the card back and told them to close the account which required a membership fee. I recieved a letter saying they were sorry I wanted to close the account but because I waited past the 30 days from when they billed me so I still had to pay the membership fee. It could have been much past that - maybe a week. I don't owe anything on the card and wasn't going to pay for a membership I didn't want. Now they are charging interest and late fees for an account I closed. I didn't charge on, and that I don't want. It was sold to be the first time with all these great benefits - beware they don't tell you all that you have to do to get them. Which I didn't. I didn't have the actual receipts for the gas I bought ( they charged me and had record) so I couldn't get a credit. So I never used it again. Why do you have to pay for something which you don't want or get.
