I've received numerous phone calls, from different individuals regarding my son's whereabouts. To which I've honestly replied "in Iraq" and I've asked nicely, calmly, and as a parent "what is this regarding?" What I received as an answer was "that they could not disclose that information but it was extremely important that they (UCB) get in touch with him.

After this type of answer, I went from a concerned parent to a guarded parent. I have contacted my son and passed on the information to him along with my skepticism of this organization. At which point I considered the matter closed.

Obviously, UCB doesn't! I've continued to receive calls from different individuals from this company. I'm passed the point of being pleasent, humane, cordial...... So now that I've got their number (1800 394 7590), I call them and tell them that I just want to call and harass them like they do me - I figure now we have some common ground. I've even consided taking out an advertisement in some porn magazine using their number so they start receiving comparable calls!

response

AUTHOR: Steve - Maumee (U.S.A.)

One question, who handles his affairs. Does he have a spouse, a domestic partner that would have power of attorney over his assets while he is away. You know that it is a collection agency. If you are getting calls obviously you are getting mail for him. How about this OPEN it and see what it is about. May be your son does not care to pay his bills and that is why he did not call them back, or care to get it taken care of. Maybe you should see what it is about and see what you could do to get it taken care of. Maybe it is a medical bill and they need his billing info... Debt collectors arent that bad...

Reading Steve's responses is getting boring

AUTHOR: Darla - Belleville (U.S.A.)

I've seen Steve's comments to other complaints about UCB. He appears to fit right in with the UCB organization.

I would like to just say, I hope your son returns safely from Iraq. Best of luck to your family.

Send UCB a Cease and Desist letter if he is not able to pay his debt. The last thing he needs to deal with upon returning from fighting for our country is these people.

Soldiers and Sailors Relief Act

AUTHOR: Jeffery Coffman - Magnolia (U.S.A.)

Under the USSERA (google it) a person on active duty has certain protections against debt collectors for accounts opened prior to going on active duty. For example, interest is fixed permanently (even after he gets off active duty) at 6 %. Collection actions must stop.

If the debts were incurred before active duty send the collector proof of active duty and a cease letter.

#4 Consumer Suggestion

BEWARE of bad information and bad "advice".

AUTHOR: Steve - Bradenton (U.S.A.)

Darla and Jefferey have both given bad advice with inaccurate info.

First for Darla. There is no such thing as "cease and desist" in debt collections.
The exact verbage directly from the FDCPA is CEASE COMMUNICATIONS.

And, sending such a request does not stop collections activity.
However, it usually does bring a lawsuit.

Now for Jefferey, REAL BAD information here!

First of all, there is no such thing any more as the "Soldier's and Sailor's Civil Relief Act". That is old news. That act was replaced with new legislation and is now the "Servicemember's Civil Relief Act".

And, the 6% rate is NOT indefinite after coming home or getting off active duty.
Where did you get that?

The MAXIMUM time you have is 180 days, and the minimum is 30, depending on the state you live in and your circumstances.

NOT indefinite by any means.

I was actually in the military and used this act. My credit card companies gave me 90 days after returning from active duty, and my auto loan gave me 30 days.
