I recieved a card offer with credit card attached, a Real Credit card with my name on it, only they have an incorrect last name of mine. I have been married for years and have not used the last name they have since.
The offer states to do nothing if I do not wish to activate, so i did nothing, tore the card and disposed of it. A week later i recieved a billing statement from this credit card company. I did call the number on statement, they said the only thing i could do is close the account, i told them i never activated it and they wouldnt agree with me, they didnt have a dispute dept. that i could access by phone.
Basically they say i owe this bill with their finance charge and enroll fee on it, no purchases on it of course because i never activated card in first place. I am just amazed that a company could knowingly be so criminal.
And i thought i was doing the right thing by not activating the card, which i never applied for in the first place! These people need to be Stopped!!!! I would welcome any help in this matter, i have reported them to my state's Attny. General and to the FTC. I hope that they will help me, wondering if i need to do more.....

Contact your Attorney General, and the AG in the state the card was issued. It is illegal to issue a credit card if you never applied for it. This kind of thing was stopped many years ago. You also need to send them a certified letter and demand they show you a contract that you signed for this card, as well as when it was activiated.

Thank you Dave for the great advice, i did report them to my state's a/g but had not reported to theirs, going to do that! I have also done one better, found an old lawsuit against them from the OCC and i filed a case against them with that agency. I have several addresses to this company and am in process of sending cert. letters to all of them hoping that one or more will get to them.
Again, ty for your great input!

Just a quick follow-up, On my behalf, after many letters, the Attorney General did an inquiry to Credit One Bank and asked them to validate this account they have in my name, my old name. I have sent a few letters to them myself and their response was vague. Now that the A/G's office is involved, I recieved a quick reply from the company stating that I owe nothing and that they have made all changes to my credit report (they put the acct on my credit report!). Even though they claim that "someone" activated this account by phone, they still have admitted some fault in billing me for a bogus account. I guess we cant have it all, but I have learned a big lesson.......Write those letters, people!!!! They work and you dont have to converse with these people over the phone, make them put thier lies in writing/ via written correspondence! And get your officials involved. If anyone has had trouble with this company, Please share your comments and feel free to ask questions on how to write effective letters, etc. Good Luck and God Bless!

this is completely wrong. i dont know who you were speaking with but any credit one employee knows that if the card is not activated it would have closed within 14 days and the balance would be zeroed. even in the case where the card holder activates the account, if there are no transactions on the account, the card holder can still request the account to be closed and the ballance would be zeroed out.
