If you are a company that accepts American Express cards, You might want to read this!!

We accepted an American Express card for Payments of over $9000.00 in a two month period from one customer. It was for Computer Hardware and On-Site service to several of his Restaurants. All is Well........UNTIL..We got a letter from American Express letting us know that this customer was DISPUTING ALL of the charges. Why would he do this you ask? He decided that for the Month of August, he didn;t have enough Money to pay his bill so he decided to pull a scam and dispute over $9000.00 in charges to try to delay paying his bill!!

We immediately contacted this customer and went over EVERY charge with him and he admitted to us that he just didn't have the money that Month. He immediately called American Express after our conversation about ethics and had the disputes CANCELED.

American express had sent us another letter letting us know that since the dispute had happened that they were going to HOLD out over $9000.00 of our NEW money going into their account until the dispute was resolved. GREAT, I didn't have a problem with that because our customer had CANCELED the dispute so we thought ALL IS WELL. NOT!!

Now american express said they were going to hold out our money for an ADDITIONAL 4-6 weeks (Guaranteed 6 weeks!!) because the customer MIGHT call back in and dispute the charges again!!!

Obviously we were very confused.....There was NO claim, we had done NOTHING wrong, but good 'ol American Express made up some Lame excuse how they now have a right to hold our money until the time was up to release it!!

I called American express and after 3 hours on the phone trying to get to a LIVE person, I could get NO WHERE with them. I even asked them since they were going to hold our Money for 6 weeks if We were going to get the standard interest rate on the money and the answer was NO!!.

SOOOO to make a long story short.....PLEASE DO NOT ACCEPT AMERICAN EXPRESS!!!! Lets show this big corporate hog that we don't have to put up with their Bull*$it and put them out of business!!

Not Just Amex

AUTHOR: John - Louisville (U.S.A.)

Credit card companies have very liberal charge-back policies....you can just about say anything and they'll take your money back during the dispute process....Visa/MC/Amex....they're all the same.

It's VERY important to get a signed sales receipt for jobs such as yours....with this, you can easily and successfully challenge any charge-back

#2 Consumer Suggestion

Can you stand the loss?

AUTHOR: Larry - Phoenix (U.S.A.)

Anyone who accepts credit cards needs to ask himself whether he can stand the loss of a chargeback.

Nine thousand dollars is a huge hit for any company and you should have known that there was some risk that the customer would dispute the charges. Every company that takes cards needs to have a policy in place that limits how much any customer can charge and under what circumstances. The maximum amount that you will accept on a charge should be no greater than the amount you can afford to lose.

Even if the customer does not dispute the charges, some credit card processors will withhold payment to the merchant when there is a high charge from a customer. Somewhere on the Ripoff Report there is a complaint from the owner of a moving company whose processor placed a hold on a payment for an amount similar to yours. In that case, there was no dispute from the customer but the processor was concerned that it could happen and placed a 6-month hold on the payment.

You made a mistake in accepting a charge that would put you in a bind if not paid.
