I was with us bank for about 1 year.  It was my first credit card, and I abused it a few times in the beginning, but nothing serious.

I recently went on vacation and went over on my credit card by 9 dollars.  I didn't notice it for about 3 days because it was a finance charge that brought my credit card over the limit.

They charged me 80 dollars for overspending for 3 days.  They also kept telling me that they had already deleted over 100 dollars in late fees from me within the last year, but its not that hard to have reached 100 dollars if they charge 80 dollars for being overdrafted for 3 days.

I don't fully understand...

Was this 80 dollar charge an accumulation of overdraft fees from transactions...or a charge for the amount of time (3 days) that you were overdrafted and didn't cover it with a deposit?

And here's another one....

"I recently went on vacation and went over on my credit card by 9 dollars.  I didn't notice it for about 3 days because it was a finance charge that brought my credit card over the limit. They charged me 80 dollars for overspending for 3 days."

Does this ROR scream customer negligence or what?

First of all, spending even close to a CC limit is about as intelligent as checking for gas leaks with a lighter. CC's obviously make alot of money from finance charges (and OTL fees) so when that average daily balance calculates, yes, it could potentially put you over the limit. This is clearly stated in the LEGAL BINDING CONTRACT that you signed when you opened the account. Let me guess, you didn't read that did you?

Second of all, despite the fact that you only went over nine bucks, you're still over the limit. Rules are rules and you broke them. Now face the punishment. What do you tell police officers that pull you over for speeding? "Gosh officer, I was only going twenty miles an hour over the speed limit. That's not alot." Yeah, right! Welcome to Ticketville, population: you.

Third of all, even on vacation, you have to pay attention to your finances. Quit slacking. You've got a 24 phone service, ATM's, and the internet to use to check your balance and account activity, so the "No one told me!" excuse won't work anymore.

I can't wait for Edward and Ronny G to start up their "Banks made a gazillion dollars last year in fees" speech or the legendary "The government will make the greedy banks pay" bit. Oh man, I'm counting the moments. Bring on the excuses!

You were not the only one...

Ronny I can see where you got confused.  It is hard to tell if the person is talking about a Credit Card or Debit Card.  The odds are it is a Credit Credit card and it comes down to them not understanding how credit works.

If it is a Credit Card and is true that the finance charges put it OVER the limit that is not a RipOff.  Because they are the ones that charged up the card to get it close to the limit.   The responsibility for "overspending" falls on one person..the OP.

The best thing they can do is pay as much as they can as quickly as they can.  Not only to get it under the limit, but enough under the limit to where interest, or other fees won't put them back over.

No speech IamtheLAW...but a quick reply

AUTHOR: Ronny g - North hollywood (USA)

Calm down bro...you are going to give yourself a coronary...Why are you so angry with this poster? Are they complaining to you personally? Did the poster call your house or something? Did the poster ask you to cover the late fees caused by the 9 dollars? Have a rough day or something? More junkies at your bank again?

I can't wait to see what happens when the banks change some policies and to make up for all the lost revenue...start attacking the "good" customers by taking away free checking and applying crappy interest rates and whatever they can think of like lowering credit limits and canceling cards for no apparent reason.  This ought to be good. And there will be no one to blame but the banks..since this is their decision to make these changes now.

As far as this poster....to everyone's surprise although I do think the charges are a bit steep..as the Kangaroo Court states (punishment)...(yea, he gets a thrill when people are punished ...sicko)..I do agree this poster is responsible. If you go over-limit on a credit card..there is a fee, so although the "cost" of the fee might seem like a ripoff to the average person...the bank used no deception in this case that I can find, hence it does not appear to be a legitimate ripoff since the poster seems well aware there would be fees applied from admittance of past abuse.

A reply for Robert..

AUTHOR: Ronny g - North hollywood (USA)

Okay..I understand what you explained and it cleared things up.

However I have 2 credit cards...a Visa and a MasterCard...both have at one time or another been brought over-limit strictly due to fees..not by much, maybe 5 dollars...but I was never charged any fees for this..so perhaps my banks have different policies then his.

However,,,I don't take chances anymore..I pay very early..especially if close to the limit..I know better these days, why chance it?.

I did note in this posters complaint that the bank already forgave or "deleted" over $100.00 in fees...so at this point it is safe to assume the poster needed to use more caution...I just do not find any bank deception in this case.
