On 22 April 2004 I received my AmEx statement that showed a charge of $59.95 from AEPC Member Services, Elite Traveler. At 8:00 P.M. I contacted Lisa at Elite Traveler, 888-403-9004. She advised they would credit my account. I then contacted Mike at American Expresss, 800-528-4800 and adivsed him of my conversation with Lisa. He said he would note my account for the credit. On 22 May 2004 I received my AmEx statement indicating my account was past due in the amount of $59.95. I immediately called the AmEx Customer service department and advised him of the previous conversations I had with Elite Traveler and Amex.

Navid put me on hold, came back on the line, and told me he did not know why the charge was showing back up as due on 17 June (I had checked the balance on the automated system prior to connecting to customer service) but he said he would credit my account. On 26 May 2004 I again called the automated line and discovered as of 17 June 2004 my account balace was $59.95. On that same day I did an Internet search and found Elite Traveler Magazine, Univeral Media Building, 801 Second Avenue, New York, NY 10017, president Douglas D. Gollan. I wrote letters to both Elite Traveler and AmEx, certified mail, return receipt requested.

I explained I had not ordered this product and was not interested. I do not travel and would not have signed up for this service. One June 7 I received a letter from Elite Traveler advising me that this was not their company, but perhaps it was a publication published by AMERICAN EXPRESS. I did not receive a written reponse from American Express. When I received my statement from AmEx on 17 June 2004 there was a creit of $59.95 and a zero balance on my statement. At no time during any discussion with Amex OR Elite Traveler at the above telephone number did they tell me that this was an American Express publication. I assume I got their attention by sending the certified mail to Elite Traveler magazine who did not charge my card.

#1 Individual Responds

You need to contact American Express

AUTHOR: Douglas - (United States of America)

I am sorry to hear about your situation.  We get a number of people contacting us with similar stories.  Our magazine is Elite Traveler, the private jet lifestyle magazine and our web site is Elitetraveler.com.

You were billed by a website TandLelitetraveler.com or T+Lelitetraveler.com.  This is a travel club that is operated with some connection to American Express Publishing, which publishes a travel magazine Travel + Leisure.  The publishing company is a joint venture between American Express and Time Inc., the publishing company that publishes Time, Sports Illustrated, People, etc.

Our company, our web site and our magazine have NO connection with the company billing you.  Ken Chenault, CEO of American Express would be a good place to write to get your complaint resolved.  I wish I could help further.

Yours truly, Douglas Gollan, Elite Traveler

#2 Consumer Comment

Sam, fraud

AUTHOR: Michel - Phoenix (U.S.A.)

Today I had the same issue. I found that I was charge of 85.23 for a member ship I did not know about. I called Elite Traveller and they told me that I was a member since 2007. It seems that I accepted ( they sayy a companion ticket in 2007) and since then I was a member.

What a scam, what a fraud. I never accepted anything, I never travelled with any companion ticket whatsoever. I am going to call Amex and write to the director of this company. This is Bad practices business and I hope that AMEX has nothing to do with this scam.
