As a survivor of ID theft, I try to keep tabs on possible misuse of my personal information.
I received some strange phishing calls and had reason to believe that there may be some unauthorized inquiries or extensions of credit. For peace of mind I try to renew a monitor service through Trans Union. I blamed Trans Union when they said they could not provide the three in one monitoring.
So I order through Experian, a similar service. Experian gives me a pop up window with a phone number to call. Experian at least takes the time to investigate the problem and advises the order for three in one will not go through because Equifac reported I DO NOT EXIST. The customer service rep provides me contact information for Equifax directly.
I call Equifax and they admit they have lost my social security number. Under law they are supposed to provide a letter claiming Social not found, or referencing there is not credit file OR supply a report when a request for free annual is initiated.
Equifax demands proof of identity. Proof of identity was sent on three separate occasions, yet Equifax denies receipt (even though I have proof of receipt).
Not sure how to proceed on this one. Starting to navigate new waters with credit law. Has anyone else on the boards seen this one?
