I wanted a free credit report.
I went to Experian which offered a free credit report. Big letters, direct quote:
"You're only steps away from viewing your FREE CREDIT REPORT and SCORE! PLUS, your FREE CREDIT REPORT and SCORE are available online for 30 days!"
Then it says,
"Your credit card will not be charged during the free trial period. However, valid credit card information is required to establish your account."
But hidden four paragraphs further down under the Payment Info, I missed the fine print hidden underneath, saying my "free" credit report would automatically enter me as a member. To avoid a monthly fee of $14.95, I would have to call back and terminate my membership within 9 days.
Of course, I didn't notice my "membership" until it showed up on my credit card bill (which by the way, you had to supply right up front). When I called to complain, I found out I was ALREADY being billed a second month. To appease me, they "offered" to remove only the second billing.
Effectively, this rip off makes you pay for your "free" credit report.
And I objected to having to give some guy in India all my credit information, including soc # and mother's maiden name so he could access my account.
