I have recieved several letters from Transunion, with Allstate insurance companys name and address stating that they recently discovered an issue while determining my rate for insurance. The issue was there was an inconsistency with the address information Allstate had for me and the address Transunion had in their files, leading me to believe I was a victim of identity theft. On top of this, i received a letter claiming to be Allstate just yesterday claiming they would obtain credit information for me as part of an insurance scoring process. All this in order to make me believe I am a victim of identity theft. Called Allstate and they know nothing about this and I have never even tried to get an account or insurance with Allstate. Told me to contact Transunion.

First of all if you are going to post a letter post the entire letter(with your private information blocked out of course).  Because we don't even know if this is just some random warning, or a letter stating you were declined, and the rest of the letter may lead people to the actual answer.

Did you do as they said and contact TransUnion?  Have you reviewed your credit reports to see if there is any unusual or unexpected activity?  While using someones information to get insurance is not really a normal case of Identity Theft.  It doesn't mean that you are not.

Perhaps the letter was not even from Allstate.  There are several "phishing" scams going around this one may look 99% legit but there is one little bit that is wrong and if you contact them through the info on the letter you may actually be opening yourself up to Identity Theft.

Perhaps it is just human error.  It is possible that when someone applied for insurance they entered in information correctly and that incorrect information(such as the SSN) was actually yours.
