TransUnion, TransUnion free credit report is NOT FREE! Chester Pennsylvania

Because like many other people I'm thinking about re-financing my home, I decided to get the "free" credit report that I'm ENTITLED TO. After all, it's MY information, right?
Using a link in an article on the CNN page, I went through the process of getting my free credit report from the big three credit companies, TransUnion, Experian, and Equifax. You can order a report from each company, but you must register separately for each.
I'm only part of the way through the process for TransUnion, and ALREADY I find that to get a USEFUL report I will have to pay $7.95 in order to find out my CREDIT SCORE. Wait a minute? Isn't that part of my credit report? Apparently not. This tiny number, which I NEED to know, the ONE number that REALLY tells me where I stand, a number that requires NO effort on TransUnion's part to provide to me, is dangled in front of my face like a doggy treat- making me beg for MY OWN INFORMATION.
Is the credit score only a semi-useful OPTION, not really a necessary part of a credit report? No. It is not. To use TransUnion's own words, cut and pasted from their page... "Your credit score is an essential part of your finances."
That's right folks, an ESSENTIAL part of MY FINANCES.
So basically, TransUnion admits that they are giving me a crippled version of my credit report, and only by paying extra can I get the information I really need. It's like buying a car, then finding out that the KEY that starts the car costs extra for all the heavy lifting involved in handing it to me.
I am going to pay the $7.95 for MY information, because the free report I am entitled to by law is useless without it. HOWEVER I am filing this Ripoff Report, and will do so for each of the other two companies if I should find that they also stoop so low as TransUnion.
Your free credit report is NOT FREE!

The entitlement for a free credit report every 12 months is mandated by the Fair Credit Reporting Act. The act clearly mandates that the complete report, and the report ONLY is a free entitlement.
CREDIT SCORES are not free and are not part of this free entitlement.
Sorry, but if you want your FICO credit score from any of the 3 CRAs, you're gonna have to pay for it.
It is what it is.

Although I like knowing my credit score, I get that for free on a monthly basis with a credit card I have, and even without that, having your credit report is still useful. The reason we are given free copies of our credit report is so that we can check them over on a regular basis and look for things like identity theft, inaccurate accounts, etc. The reason we get our credit report for free isn't so we know our credit power, rather we get it so we can be informed and use it as an attempt at reducing fraud and keeping our identities safe. If you want to know your ability to obtain credit, then you should have to pay for that info. I am just glad we get our reports free now.

Yeah I learned this the hard way also. I wanted my credit score and thought that the score and report was all in one and found that I was wrong. Well I have made myself very educated now by research and talking with others.
But like the other two have said the credit score has never been free. However, the credit report is free and it very useful. They help you determine what determines your score.
Also, if you ever want a credit score the only one that really matters is the Fico (Equifax) score. You will notice that it's always the lowest one and many creditors always look at this score. I always pay for all three to keep up (it's worth the $25) but its the Fico that matters.

The ONLY authorized source online for a TRULY FREE credit report under the law is :
www.annualcreditreport.com
Any other site is a scam, and you will pay.
If you choose not to recieve your 3 reports online, you can request them by mail and have them mailed to you.
Here is the link to the form you need to do that:
http://www.ftc.gov/bcp/conline/include/requestformfinal.pdf
Think about it. If something is "free", why would they need your credit card?
Just common sense here.
