I went to Coast Dental for a cleaning. They told me I had gingivitis and a cavity. I did not have the symptoms listed by their own pamphlet for gingivitis. I looked at the bill and they had a 200 dollar toothbrush on it. I asked if that was necessary and they hesitated and said it was recommended.

I knew something was wrong, so I went to another dentist, David Johnson of St. Petersburg who was a private dentist. I didn't tell him of my previous diagnosis. I was told by them that I didn't have any problems - no cavities or gingivitis. I asked them specifically about gingivitis and they said I had early stages of it but with good oral hygiene (flossing daily and brushing teeth daily) that it would go away.

Coast Dental is a company of cheats who try to get as much money out of you as possible. I was lucky enough to get a second opinion before I wasted money on gingivitis treatment(300 dollars) and a cavity removal. Do not go to these people. Find a good private dentist.

Tag on additional services every time

AUTHOR: Smiley - Land O Lakes (U.S.A.)

I too went to Coast Dental and they tagged on so many extra services I thought I was being scammed. First visit they told me I had to get two xrays and only one was fully covered by insurance. This panaramic xray cost me $20 and after I refused to sign the paper allowing them to charge me and my insurance for the extra xray they told me I would not be able to get my cleaning done until I got the two xrays. I gave in and had the extra xray. Then it got worse. I was checked by the dentist and he did not report any problems.

Next the hygienist checked and told me I had a few pockets in my gums that measured 5mm and I would have to pay for Periodontal Maintence and Antibacteria Irrigation. And additional $85 to add to the $20. I spent about 10 min arguing with the Hygienist and then the Dentist over the scam they were trying to pull on me.

In all my 40 years of seeing dentist I never had any of them tell me I needed extra services like Coast Dental was charging me for. Warning to anyone who sees a dentist that if you are presented an authorization form before you get any services performed be very suspicious. Also If they offer credit cards and payment plans.

So you think I would have learned my lesson..

I went back 6 months later and as soon as I sat down in the chair I was handed a paper with additional services ready for me to sign. Additional $85 for Periodontal Maintence and Antibacteria Irrigation. I said you haven't even looked at my mouth how can you say I need these additional services. The Hygienist said I was diagnosed with Periodontal Desease and would always be charged since it will never get better. Basically they would never qualify for "Standard Cleaning" covered by my dental plan. So I paid the additional service fees and left vowing never to return.
