I am an avid Target shopper. I shop at Targets all over the Southern California area. I see people of all races working at Target. Saying Target discriminates against blacks is absurd. Do you go there everyday at all hours of the day to make sure you've seen every single person who works there? Maybe there are some black folks working there that you haven't seen. This is one of the most ridiculous posts I've ever read. It doesn't mean a thing that you worked there briefly and didn't work with a black person. Pure coincidence.

This is according to the US Census Bureau. I imagine that there are lots of companies that employ few African-Americans..they are outnumbered 97.9% to 2.1%. If the stats were reversed and you made that allegation, I would say "Oh my God, he's probably right."
Don't read racism into everything.

I'd love to find a department store that actually had such a real committment to quality. In reality, it's likely a result of local demographic statistics as another reply mentioned. You can bet the class-action lawyers would be all over that company if there was even a _hint_ that anyone in management even looked at "Jamaal" or "La'Keesha" the wrong way. That store would be put out of business.

The Target store in West Burlington, IA discriminates against blacks! There has never been a black employee there ever, even tho many have applied for work.

Stop pretending it isn't there. That's when racism flourishes.
EEOC sues Target for bias
Says it discriminated against blacks
By JIM SMITH
The U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission contends that Target Corp., the nationwide retail chain with more than 1,000 stores, has engaged in racial discrimination against black workers at one area shop.
In a lawsuit filed this week in federal court in Philadelphia, the EEOC is seeking up to $300,000 in damages from Target, based in Minneapolis.
The money damages would compensate former and current black workers at the store in Springfield, Delaware County.
The EEOC also seeks a court order barring future discrimination at the store on Baltimore Pike.
The suit contends that the store's manager, Jeff Barnes, who is white, created a "hostile work environment" for black employees.
Corporate executives allegedly took no action, despite complaints from Barnes' former top assistant, Michael Hill, who is black.
Barnes yesterday said he was unable to talk with this reporter about the EEOC's lawsuit.
Target said in a statement yesterday that it "is disturbed by the baseless lawsuit claiming race discrimination brought by the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC). Target intends to vigorously defend itself against the allegations, brought on behalf of one individual and some ill-defined group.
"Target is disappointed that the EEOC chose to take this action in the midst of informal negotiations, especially since both are required by law to try and resolve this matter, without the need for litigation. Instead of engaging in serious attempts to resolve this matter, the EEOC repeatedly refused to provide Target with information concerning its claims and repeatedly refused to meet with Target in person."
Barnes allegedly told Hill, 31, of Wyncote, who was training to be a store manager, "We will never put a black person in the store-management position."
Barnes also allegedly made "racially insensitive comments" to Hill, "including but not limited to 'black women are the lowest form of life... ' and that his mother used to work with black people and she referred to them as 'lazy.' "
"Incredibly," the EEOC lawsuit asserts, the chain's district manager refused to transfer Hill to another store, even after Hill was hospitalized for chest pains "due to the stress of the [work] environment."
Instead, district manager Craig Snyderman allegedly told Hill "that he should not take Barnes' statements 'so literally.'
"He further stated 'what you have to understand is that sometimes people say these things, and that doesn't mean they are racists.' "
Finally offered a "demotion" to another store, Hill left the company a year ago.
Other black workers told the EEOC that Barnes had "treated white employees more favorably than black employees," that he had "verbally abused" black workers and that several blacks had quit rather than work for Barnes.
One black female said that Barnes' "verbal berating of her in the presence of her co-workers was so outrageously embarrassing that she left the store crying hysterically and never returned."

What a load of crap this posting is. It sounds to me like hardly any African American folks live in Iowa so if there are not many to choose from, it doesn't seem that far fetched to me that there would be few working at Target.
I'm so sick of the race card being played because a certain race isn't getting what they want. Whoever it was who sued Target probably didn't get along with their manager and claimed racism. It makes it that much harder for the ones who are really discriminated against. I have a close girlfriend who is black and it makes me sad the stories she tells me of things that have happened to her over her life. But when she doesn't get along with someone she doesn't pull the race card right out. I have seen countless black people working at Targets all over the place. What a crock that Target is racist. I actually used to work there and had a black manager. This is pathetic.

Jessica,
I work for Target and have been working for Target and yes they are racist, it isn't a card you pull, it isn't game, it is real and alive in Target. I am supposing you are not black and guess what, I am.
I agree that yes, it should not be used as an excuse just because you are mad at some one. However, if I realize that I am being treated badly and no one else is and it just so happens that no one else is black but me and in fact it is the only difference between me and the other people, then yes I will say it is racism.
Also, understand that racism exist in people not in companies, it is a human trait. It lives in only certain individuals and not in all.
I have to wonder if you ever worked for target, because if you did you would know that any 2 TLs, and there are lots of them, can hire some one. Hiring isn't always up to the big boss or the few racist that slipped in unnoticed. Therefore, if there are 20 TLs, like in my store, and one is racist and the other 19 are not the chances of minorities in the work place is greater. However, that one person is still racist! More importantly, that one person could good and well be the store manager.
Like I said, you sound like a shopper, not a person who actually has worked for target or even been interviewed by them because if you were you would have noticed that more than one person interviewd you, which is Target's policy.
Hence the whole, one perosn being racist and the others not being racist.
As for your best friend being black, you may understand and truely be angered at the fact this happens to her but you are not her.
When you walk down the street and some one spits at you or doesn't hire you or arrest you or thinks that you are inferior to them because your eyes are whatever color or you are a woman or your hair is whatever color or for what ever physical thing about you, that you happen to love but can't change,...then speak on discrimination.

I have worked for Target for 4 years. I know that in the particular store I work in this would be a ridiculous claim.. laughable. Our store has an equal number of different races from black(several whom are immigrants) to white to hispanic and more.
This is the first time I've heard the claim.

I typically work closing and mid shifts on the sales floor, and I'm usually in Jewelry, which means that I'm 'trapped' in my department, unlike most of the sales floor crew. I have personally worked with five black people and know of at least one other person who works in the backroom. One of those individuals works for security, another is an LOD (Leader on Duty). Another of our LODs is Latina, as are our Domestics team lead and several other team members. And, yes, we have our share of asian people, too.
In short, it isn't Target discriminating, it's the people doing the hiring that are discriminating. They will probably be fired eventually.

I just happened across this and I felt compelled to comment on it.
First of all I worked at Target in 2004. On my shift alone there were 2 black women, and 1 black man. I know there were more black people working at that time, just not on my shifts. If you walk in the store here in Burlington, IA today you would see a black cashier, and a black dressing room attendant. This is just idiotic, and not true. To me it sounds like someone that was hired for "seasonal" work and when the season was over they were not asked to stay....of course a lot of people are let go for little or no reason after the "season" is over... and you are told that when you are hired at those times.

It's not a racism issue. It's a quality image issue.
Target, unlike their ghetto competition Walmart, actually seems to care about a presentable image. If some ghetto thumping gang-banger with his pants drooping down to his calves applied for a job at Target, they're going to get turned away. (and they should)
Now if that same degenerate applies at Walmart, they'll probably get hired. The same thing would apply to some tobbacco chewing, ZZ top bearded piece of white trash. They would get turned away by Target as well.
Color isn't the factor. It's the appearance, attitude, and values of the applicant. Stop playing the race card. It detracts from legitimate cases of racism.

It's TRUE that Target Store here in Dallas/Fort. Worth, Texas area does discriminate against Black and 'U may ask "How do I know???",
I'm a (Black) woman which have visited the location @ City Place Shopping Center and I had vowed not to go back into this location because of the racist tatics I had experience but had to go back on my word 2x,
~ Due to being sick and had to get something drink (Sprite) for my nausea,
~Due to being thristy (hungry) and since it was closet where I walking,
I normally keep my word but have slack on this issue (etc), and will focus to keep my word (Never To Look Back),
Anyway...Last Friday (08/27/2010) I had went inside this same Target Store and went to purchase something to drink and something to eat,
When I had walked in "All eyes were glued to me" and I had this feeling that I was the already "target" like before, but I continue to walk,
While I was trying to find the snack (check out section) and I had notice the Target Front Greeter (Black man) rep had walked from where he was standing, and came toward,
Where I had walked off, "This me feel (like before) that he was watching me (following me) to see if I was going to steal???",
First of all I DON'T steal and Second I had started to walk out without purchasing anything but it was HOT (and I was tried) and needed something to keep from being dehydrated (for not drinking something) and sick @ my stomach (for not to eat),
So, I had went to long (line) and then all sudden another Target rep (Black woman who had appeared to have some management authority),
Singles me out with all the other Non Blacks standing in line, and say (from distance) to me,
"Mamma", I can help 'U???, and this was probably her way to get over to register to check to see if I had something hidden and of course I had told her that " I'm alright" and "Do 'U know she had continue to ask me this same question again???",
I don't answer her again because I was becoming irated that she would ask me same question that I had just answer,
Now listen to this..."Why I get outside and this same Target Front Door Greeter (Black man) was smoking a cigarette" and standing next to a (White) man who may have been uncover (I was told they have uncover clothes) law enforcement in Target Stores,
When without notice...I say to the Target Front Door Greeter (Black man) which had followed me,
"That not everybody Black steal", and I'm don't know what PROBLEM with Target discrimination of Blacks (Yes, WE have people in our race (anyother race) which do things not right) and against LAW but this doesn't mean,
All Blacks steal for what they wanted and I do say that ALL Target Stores should be investigate because there's no needed Blacks should be "targeted" for "Shopping While Black",
Some Non-Blacks think that WE are always complaining but if they were Black and experience what WE (Blacks) have from the time of coming here to United States,
Would understand our struggles (the stereo types) and racism WE face (sometimes) daily and I just wanted to be treated without being "target" @ Target Store where I'm going to avoid be all means (necessary in the future),
"Why do I wanted to give Target anymore of my money to be treated like a thief without money???",
Ms. Justice,
TEXAS

I want to be as specific as I can. I have no fear of Target. Target discriminates and racially profiles black customers. How do I know? I was one.
November 2010
I went black friday shopping with my daughter. Target had one of their white contract security guards follow me through out the entire store. Everywhere I went he was there. My daughter who was five at the time..... Asked me daddy why is that polic officer behind you, I said I dont know. I played his game, I went everywhere in the store...... he was right there.......... I got tired of it..........Asked the officer why is he following me around he said,,,, he wanted to see if I need help............ Okay!, Its Target, there are actually Target employees who I could ask, he knew he f-up. I told him lets go to the front of the store and ask the manager, are you required to follow customers around or help them. Sure enough, the manager was a young white male who probably told Opie to follow me around. Nevertheless, I never been in the store again.
The store is located in Ellicott City, Maryland, physically address:
