After jumping through ridiculously complex hoops (involving both web-mail and US Mail), and submitting all ridiculous documents within difficult time-frames, I got an e-mail from On-Rebate that I had sucessfully completed the rebate process.

Quite awhile later I was e-mailed that the rebate was denied by the manufacturer because the serial number of the monitor was wrong. Well, it's the serial number that is engraved in the nameplate of the monitor I got from Tiger-Direct, so I gave up with the full realization that this was a fraudulent offer from the get-go. On-Rebate generously offered to let me jump through a bunch of new hoops -- they must think I'm stupid. What were they going to have me do? Have a different nameplate engraved for the monitor?

I filed a report with the Federal Trade Commission and got a "case number" -- I don't really expect anything to come from it, but if enough complaints come in against a given entity, I'm sure they take some sort of action. I sent a letter to the Dade County district attorney, but got no response. My guess is that Miami and Florida in general are probably save havens for fraudulent businesses -- there certainly seem to be a lot of them located there, and, as I mentioned, the district attorney seems to have no interest in learning of fraudulent activity going on in his juristiction.

So, I'll never again buy from Tiger Direct. For that matter, I'm very biased against buying anything from anyone in Florida. Lessen learned! Move on!

One further step

AUTHOR: Dennis - San Leandro (U.S.A.)

I've decided to waste a little more time on this fraud. Since TigerDirect/On-Rebate require that part of the rebate process be sent by US Mail (in fact I sent by certified mail), I have decided to copy all documents and subsequent e-mail correspondence and send it to the US Postal Inspectors to see if they will investigate and prosecute them for mail fraud.

I think this may prove to be the most effective remedy to put these people out of business. I've heard the Postal Inspectors are slow, but tenacious. I don't care about the $75 anymore. I've given that up for lost. But I really would like to see these people prosecuted. I'm sure all on-line suppliers would take note and clean up their act to the extent that they might employ some of the same fraudulent methods as TigerDirect and On-Rebate.
