I recently bought a laptop at Fry's just two days ago because Fry's was having a sale on this very laptop. The salesperson kindly went back to the stock room and got a hold of this laptop and did all the necessary paperwork and brought it to the front cashier. Took it home and decided that this wasn't the laptop that I wanted. Two days later brought it back to return. Walk in and was told to go to the service area where they fix the computers. The guy opens and does a check and finds everything is in order. He then sends me back to the front where I was told that there would be a 15% restocking fee. Of course this was news to me, I didn't know anything about it. I bought the laptop for about $1300 or so and so the restocking fee came out close to 160. Told them that I didn't know anything about this restocking fee prior to returning to Fry's. They said that there was a sticker on the box. I decided that the restocking fee was outrageous and to just take back the laptop that I no longer want.
Be warned about Fry's ridiculous restocking fees. They don't warn you about it beforehand. I don't even understand why they would allow us to return in in a certain amount of time if they're just going to charge us for it!

I don't know where you usually buy your computers, but this is very common at most stores that sell high end electronics. If you've got a dead PC, that's one thing. But, if you just decide you don't like it, the store has to resell it as used or open box, which brings a much lower price than a new computer. Somebody has to pay for the reduced value of that computer. They're simply passing along some of that cost to you because you decided to return the item because you didn't like it.

This is very normal in the electronics industry. Nearly every electronics retailer charges a restocking fee. If you were returning it because it was broken or defective you wouldn't be charged the fee, but since you are returning it simply because you dont want it you will be charged. These fees are always posted with the company's return policy.
