I participated in the interview process and one day of training at COR Concepts, now in McLean, VA. Please google Cydcor and Ds-max, the parents companies to this multi-level marketing scam. I quit after my first day.

Those of you who have gone through the process will see familiar stories. Submitting your resume and receiving a call-back within hours, a 5 minute first interview that doesn't allow time for you to question anything, and the 9 hour long day of observation schlepping door-to-door in the car (and therefore at the mercy) of a COR salesperson. And, of course, at the end of the day you take a bogus quiz and get an immediate job offer.

As others have said, do not be fooled into thinking this is the prestigious opportunity it will be presented as. These companies do nothing but recruit and hire salespeople under the guise of "management positions". They interview every day and their turnover rate is greater than 90%. I really encourage you to read the other Ripoff Reports on Cydcor to convince yourself of the eerie similarities among everyone's experiences.

That said, I would like to give a few specifics about COR Concepts. First, COR has recently re-located to northern Virginia from Philadelphia. This is the same COR Concepts that has been negatively reviewed on this site several times. Be aware of their ads on job sites like Monster and craigslist; they are posted nearly daily and you should be able to find one on the Washington DC craigslist right now. Look for "ENTRY LEVEL TO MANAGEMENT" in the header.

Besides the typical shady dealings of Cydcor affiliates, COR had some personalized smarm to add to the mix. First, there is the off-putting duo of president Gabrielle Corcoran and vice-president Melody Herman, Gabrielle's Best Friend Forever. The two mid-twentysomethings look--and act--like the type of girl who was not quite pretty enough to make it into the ugliest sorority. Melody has the typical Cydcor schtick of blasting inappropriate club music in the office. Gabrielle admitting to hiring her because they were totally, like, best friends. Both Melody and Gabrielle would benefit from learning how to dress and apply make-up appropriate to the office (and to flatter their bodies).

I went through the interview and one day of training before I quit. During the 2nd interview, Gabrielle bragged that she was taking Melody out to see Dane Cook and that "the company was paying". She bragged about it to her employees, obviously trying to inspire them. I found it to be completely obnoxious to flaunt unethical use of the company's funds, especially considering her severely underpaid underlings don't get compensated for the hundreds of miles of travel they do per week to generate money for Gabrielle.

As is typical with these affiliates, I was offered the job and not allowed to take any time to think it over. This did set off a red flag for me, but I was sorely in need of money and figured I could always quit if I didn't like it. Another red flag was that I was not allowed to set a start date for one week later, but was heavily pressured to come in the next day "as a show of good faith". I managed to gain "permission" to come in just for the morning meeting and then have my actual start date be a week later, but I did not appreciate the pressure put on me. I was too desperate for a job to realize that it was actually THEIR desperation on display by this behavior.

I'd also like to mention company policy re: sick days. You are not allowed to call in sick; you must report to work for morning atmosphere and then your health will be evaluated by Gabrielle, who will determine whether you can work or not. I'm sorry, but as an adult college grad I was not about to have my basic autonomy over my health tromped on by Gabrielle, who possess the dangerous personality combination of being both immoral and a complete idiot.

Like I said, I stayed for one day of training before quitting. I therefore got to attend morning atmosphere. Again, as is typical, there are no chairs and all 20+ employees have to stand for a couple of hours before walking continuously for 8 hours in the field. The frat-party atmosphere was completely unsettling and turned me off. Although there were definitely bright people there, a few of the employees who gave their little high roller speeches and read sickening glurge designed for motivation sounded like they couldn't read past the fourth-grade level. It was embarrassing.

Speaking of embarrassing, Gabrielle managed to make an a*s of herself again by droning on and on about her "fabulous Gucci paint job" on the office walls. Because the paint colors are Gucci! And Gucci is RITZY. Therefore, Gabby must be rich, right? Isn't that awesome?

Because the Gucci walls are so precious, Gabrielle does not allow you to touch or lean against the walls. I can see where she's coming from--no one wants to conduct a meeting with employees acting noticeably bored. But when you are whipping your employees with a physically strenuous work day in terrible weather conditions, give them a break if they get tired of being on their feet after 12 hours. If the Gucci was too precious, try the Dutch Boy instead. It definitely would be more suited for Gabrielle's actual social class.

That's my story. I had suspected from the beginning it wouldn't work out for me, but felt it was worth a shot. I have to say that the guys I trained with in the field were very nice and did not hunt me down after I quit. I hope they get out of there some day soon and rise to better things.

Those of you in the DC area, please be warned that COR Concepts is another Cydcor / Ds-max clone and YOU SHOULD NOT PURSUE A JOB THERE. All of the complaints re: pay only by commission, 70+ work weeks, paying your own gas and cell bills, shady business trips, lack of benefits, etc. APPLY TO COR CONCEPTS. They treat their employees unethically and should be avoided at all costs. You deserve better no matter who you are. Go and find it.

The Top Ten signs you are involved with Cydcor, DS-Max, Granton, Innovage, The Smart Circle

AUTHOR: Pyramid God - (USA)

POSTED: Tuesday, December 01, 2009

Top ten signs you are involved with Granton Marketing, Cydcor, Innovage, or The Smart Circle:

#10: You've been employed by your company for four months but the parent company has changed it's name three times

# 9: You tell relatives and new acquaintances you are working on an 'advertising campaign' but you really sell stuff  door-to-door

# 8: You produce over $200 worth of sales - but only get about $70 of that for yourself because "the pyramid gods" yank the rest before it gets to your check.

# 7: Your 'management training' involves buying lunch for interviews that you'll never see again out of your own pocket - and you're NOT a manager, or doing any management training.

# 6: You look down on '9 to 5 schmucks' - who have secretaries that make more than you and your boss combined.

# 5: You espouse the principles & theories of the most successful people on Earth - who would be absolutely repulsed by the business you're in

# 4: You work 75 hours a week but still quietly bum money from your 16 year-old neighbor that works at McDonalds

# 3: You eat fast food more than 10 times / week . . . or cant afford to eat out at all

# 2: You live in a one-bedroom apartment with 12 other co-workers . . . and your boss is one of them.

and the number one sign you are involved with Cydcor, Granton, Innovage, The Smart Circle . . .

# 1: You work for a company that has in just 26 years employed 3 million people - and only the original 6 employees are able to support themselves with money they make there.

CORConcepts has never laid off a single employee since its inception in 2003. In fact, last year they expanded 3 times and did again in March when they opened a new location in Chicago. Our advancement policy is 100% promotion from within, so every candidate begins advancing from the same position.
( http://www.corconcepts.net/ ) We take our company policy very seriously and beg you NOT to send your resume in unless 1. You have a sense of humor (see below and the title for humor reference) 2. If your goal is to lie, cheat or steal to make a buck this company's for you. If not Run don't walk to the nearest exit!!!!!

Oh, and to answer your question, Brooke...

AUTHOR: Justine - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Tuesday, February 19, 2008

No, I am no longer unemployed. I'm not sure why you would conclude that. I left my previous job to pursue a new career in the business world, tried COR Concepts thinking it would get me a foot in the door, and realized what a scam it was. Thankfully, I accrued several other job offers over the month of December and embarked on a wonderful new career path right after the new year. I am very happy where I am. However, I never forgot my experience at CC and after some distance and time to chew it over, decided that I wanted to do what I could to warn prospective employees of what goes on there.

Though if I were still unemployed, I could very easily hop right back on careerbuilder and choose another job from the daily postings of Cydcor affiliates in norther VA (Viper International and Global Marketing spring to mind). It's not like landing a position at these places requires anything more than a pulse, so if I personally wouldn't adopt a tone of moral superiority over holding a job there.

I agree that the job market is tough these days, and I encourage all of you to hold out and not fall prey to unethical employers like COR Concepts despite current conditions.

But I wasn't hired to own the company.

AUTHOR: Justine - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Tuesday, February 19, 2008

Even taking into account the above point that owning a company can require personal investment, entry-level reps are not given company ownership! Why should salespersons on 100% commission be required to fund their own way, especially when it fosters an environment of desperation and loose ethics?

What I mean is employees are forced not just to make enough sales to cover their own expenses, but also the company expenses they incur or else they risking making little to no money per week. Even ignoring how horribly unjust this is at the level of employee health and welfare, it is easy to see how even morally upstanding people could feel pressure to lie, cheat, or even falsify information in order to cover all expenses. And unlike actual business owners, reps and leaders (and even managers at Cydcor) don't see any benefits in return.

The whole "business ownership" thing is such a bait-and-switch, too. They don't recruit people who want to own business; most who join these companies have no idea what the life of a sole proprietor actually entails. They only dangle that carrot in front of you to assuage your doubts about D2D or B2B canvassing. I do have a general idea about the time and money it would cost me to launch my own business, and that is not what I am looking to do, at least right now. I didn't answer an ad that targeted entrepreneurs; I answered "entry level to management". I was looking for a position I could start out of college that had promotional opportunities, and that is what "entry level to management" meant to me. So, no, learning that I would have to sacrifice so much of my own money and time was not at all mitigated by the half-assed promise of "someday owning a Cor Concepts clone" because that is not what my long-term goal in life is anyway.

By the way, they NEVER train you to run your own business. That sort of training would require diverse and progressive education as well on an array of hands-on experience. Mindlessly parroting the 4s 5s and 8s day after day after day benefits neither the student or teacher. I didn't see anyone offering tax seminars or actual management training to senior employees at Cor Concepts, which might actually fall under "mentorship for would-be business owners". All you get to do is spawn another Cydcor and hope you are one of the few that doesn't fail. The American Dream indeed.

BEWARE

AUTHOR: Alfiedler29 - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Monday, February 18, 2008

I have read NUMEROUS reports about all these companies and being an ex-employee of 3W Marketing (which is also linked to all these) I feel it necessary to warn more people out there as well.

As to the people who still work there...I wish you tons of luck. Funny how they used that DANE COOK scheme in Virginia bc they did it to me in NJ and I don't need people name-dropping where they are going. I had tickets myself and didn't need the 'company" to pay for me.

Anyway...moving on the point to me commenting was to inform all of you of more SISTER companies to Cydcor as well. All their ads on careerbuilder or monster have similar job titles and descriptions but for months now I have come across tons more...so here they are:

Titan Marketing, Seamless Marketing, Martini Marketing, Peerless Marketing, COR Concepts, CydCor, Platinum Promotions, World Access Marketing, Focus Marketing & Associates, Ekquisite Marketing....and i could go on and on.

ANYTHING that reads 'SPORTS & ENTERTAINMENT MARTKETING' or name drops the Yankees or Mets or Knicks, disney, VICTORIA JACKSON, restaurants and so on.They are all just business to business or residential to residential soliciters.

THEY ARE ALL SCAMS and they act like a cult. I hope enough reports will be filed that these companies will be shut down but until then I hope responding to these will help keep people aware of them and stay away!!

#6 UPDATE EX-employee responds

In response to Brooke, you are extremely brainwashed.

AUTHOR: A - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Sunday, February 17, 2008

Brooke,

You are extremely brainwashed and here is why. 1) the person was talking about a deceptive job advertisement that says you are spending your own money at your current job. You just said it yourself, you do spend your own money to supposedly build your business. I notice you got very defensive however, you did not defend the shady recruitment practices.

2)You have not yet been able to figure out that these supposed owners do not run their own businesses. They are just puppets to the consultants above them. Do you ever wonder why they either get excited, or nervous when a consultant is going to come visit them. Do you ever wonder when you go to conferences how the owners want to impress the consultants. If you are a private business owner, you would not worry about anybody, the only concerns should be with your clients, not these people at Cydcor. Wake up, Cydcor runs all of these offices. It is your typical 9-5 coorperate culture. Do you think it's different just because they have paperwork showing they own a company. How about ask your owner to show you their Cydcor contract which gives you strict rules about how you can run your business. That is not something normally associated with running a business.

3) you mention some sacrifices, however they want you to make extreme sacrifices. Do you honestly believe that running that business needs to take 14 hours a day? No, they are purposely taught to stay their for all those hours, in order to take people away from their families and anything else that might give them a negative spin. Why do you think they like to send new guys on business trips right away, cause they want to get them away from their families and suck them in. Have you ever heard a leader come back with his second interview and say they are closed. Who says that? A respectable company should not have to worry if the person is closed.

From what I see Brooke you are fairly new. Give it a few months of you slopping through the rain, snow, heat, cold while spending all your money to try to live the dream. You will learn and it's going to be a smack in the face, the faster you can get away the better off you will be.

you mean you have to pay for things out of pocket to build your own business???!!! madness!!

AUTHOR: Brooke - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Saturday, February 16, 2008

I interviewed with COR Concepts, I went on the second interview with a young professional just like myself, yes we spoke to customers all day, the office environment seemed very friendly and upbeat (still does), I was offered a position, I started 2 days later. I earn enough money to take care of myself and not stress out. I carry out every day with honesty and integrity. I am not brainwashed and I am spoken to about my future in a very open and upfront manner.

Why is everyone so scared of working hard?? After working my tush off in a salaried, benefits, vacation day position (blablablabla) for 2 years it made my stomach churn every week when I got a paycheck for the same amount as the guy who sat next to me who did about 15% of the work I did. I worked for one of the largest companies in the country. Started right after college and I worked harder than everyone around me with hopes that I would be able to move up the corporate ladder and retire at an early age. BUT WAIT, my company was forced to lay off more than half the company. Recession anyone????

With the unemployment rate at a sky high (no wonder "bloggers" have so much time on their hands) I was looking for a position where I can earn my worth, it takes balls to work on commission and I have respect for anyone that does it. It is a competitive world my friend and if you are not willing to make some sacrifices you will get eaten alive. In reality you are just making it easier for me and the other intelligent people in the worldthose that don't just believe what other people say just because it's too hard to think for themselves or realize that not everyone has the same way of thinking...move on!!

I am 25 and want to run my own business within the next few years and have the option to retire when I'm 40. I can only assume that it'll probably mean keeping my stupid 2000 dodge neon for way longer than I want to and it's probably going to be really hard and it will probably suck sometimes but since there is a company out there willing to take a chance on me at a time when no one is hiring or they're downsizing, I'm willing to take a chance on them. Especially a company whose website and employees make me laugh!

By the way Justine, I did not have the pleasure of meeting you as I did not work there during your one day duration of employment...I am a big fan of dane cook and I recall being bummed out that I couldn't see him when he was in DC because of my little brother's birthday party...that was in November...so you're still unemployed then???

More dishonesty in job ad

AUTHOR: Justine - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Thursday, February 14, 2008

Here is COR Concepts's latest ad on careerbuilder:

"Does your wrist hurt from carrying trays?
Tired of spinach dip stains on your clothes?
Spending your whole paycheck AT WORK because you have to wear your company's products?
Tired of customers who think 15% is a GREAT TIP?

CorConcepts, Inc. (www.corconcepts.net) is a privately-owned marketing and sales firm in the Northern Virginia area with an expanding client portfolio. We have experienced consistent growth since opening our doors in 2003 and have expanded locations in Philadelphia, Northern Va and New York . Our goal is to more than double in size in the next year.
We find that candidates in the restaurant, retail, and hospitality industries have valuable skill sets due to their constant interaction with the public and ability to deal with people in various situations.

All of our positions are entry-level, allow for rapid advancement into a branch-management role, and involve DIRECT INTERACTION WITH PEOPLE on a day to day basis. DO NOT APPLY to this position if you want to be in an office or cubicle staring at a computer screen eight hours a day."

Please note this part:

"[Tired of] Spending your whole paycheck AT WORK because you have to wear your company's products?"

Absolutely vile considering you'll be spending your paycheck AT WORK every single day on gas, car wear-and-tear expenses, and cell phone bills, not to mention leaders paying trainees out of pocket and the unfunded road trips. Mocking the food service business and being hypocrites on top of it is just disgusting.
