this sounds like most jobs. I think there are very few jobs that everything goes the way you want it to. There are managers that you don't agree with, managers that shouldn't be managers, managers who are unfair, managers who are wonderful and everything in between. Unfortunately as long as human beings are involved, that's the way the world works.
Just be glad these days that you have a job. There are millions of people out of work who would love to have any kind of a decent job.
You just need to suck it up and do your best. If you just can't stand it, start looking for another better job but my advice is to still do the best you can at this one. When you submit your next resume they will probably check with your present employer and you need a good response.
Welcome to the real world of work.
Doesn't really sound like a Chinese sweat shop environment to me.

I completely know what you're talking about and I'm almost positive you work at the same Dillards I worked at earlier this year. I had the same issues as you did. And the fat, bald man upstairs was constantly coming down asking about our credit applications and crying about how we weren't doing good the next morning at the meeting. Do they really think that we want to screw innocent people into a high-interest credit card for a piece of CANDY or a bag of CHIPS?!? I don't think so! And to threaten our jobs with the stress of having to get 4 apps a month is erroneous! Although, you might work at the the other location up north, the south has it's problems too! And I do know for a fact that one manager in particular that everyone hates will watch you from the camera room ALL DAY LONG. I was always sketched out when she knew exactly what I was doing at any minute of the day, until I found out from the security guard that she was spying on us!! CREEPY!! It's sad to see that nothing has changed in that place, and that's exactly why I left.

LMAO! hahahaha! yes, i work at citadel lol. Im pretty sure I have an idea who you are... if its the same manager that im talking about. she "manages" 3 departments, all of them the same...2 of them are next to eachother on the 2nd floor and one is on the 3rd floor. I think there is only ONE manager that sits in the camera room all freakin day. Anyway, yea, she's a b**ch. But so is the skinny leg redneck that does the hiring. She just hides it a little better than the "other" woman. And Mr F**ktard, OH! What a douchebag! And that's why he is hitler and she is a nazi :)

Well,
I'm pretty sure then that we are talking about the same scary ''cat-eyed" manager. Although I don't remember her managing an upstairs department...I hope this isn't a new promotion for her. I do know that she works in conjunction with Hitler/Satan, she's his right hand woman!! And the skinny-legged redneck woman is completely evil in every way. I'm pretty sure sh'e the one stirring up the evilness in all of them! Good thing I left before I chewed her out!! Maybe I worked with you on the 2nd floor dungeon??

I had a short little manager that thought D's was the top be all end all. What a joke. This job is only good for college kids and people that need a quick job for a few months because thats all the time you have before they start looking for reasons to can you.
A complete joke and Ol man D and his kids are assholes running the company in the ground

I don't think we are talking about the same person. The manager that I'm talking about is kinda new. She has only been there since end of july/beginning of august. Somewhere around there. I work in ladie's shoes (i was in kids shoes from january 2008 until about june or july). My old manager, Carla, was the sh*t. We all loved her to death. But the new manager is an evil, evil devil b*tch.
If Mr W and skinny legs D made a baby, this woman would be it! She is so much worse than both of them. She is a vile woman that always talks down to her employees. There is one employee in ladies shoes that is just such a suck up that she pretends not to hate her. Apparently she complains about her at home, but then when we complain about her, she reports it to the b*tch.
The only manager that I know of that run's downstairs now is J (red hair)...since we cant say names on here. I like her tho. She is cool for the most part. Sometimes I want to slap her, but she makes pretty babies, so its okay :). Im sure they all are lifeless jerkoffs that sit in the camera room half the day.
So, my friend and I are going to write to B Squires and Mr H (old, nice grey haired man that does visits sometimes). They need to know how the shoe employees get treated. But, Karma is a b*tch and will bite her in her nasty @**. :) yay!!!
Oh...and what is the "2nd floor dungeon"?

I DON'T SHOP THERE and I can't imagine anyone who does because there are so many OTHER places to get clothes CHEAPER!
IF DILLARD'S HAD TO DEPEND ON PEOPLE LIKE ME, THEY WOULD GO BROKE TOMORROW AND THEN NOBODY WOULD HAVE A JOB THERE.
THE JOB MARKET IS GETTING MORE AND MORE LAYOFFS EVERY DAY SO MAYBE YOU WILL BE LAID OFF AND YOU WON'T HAVE TO WORRY ABOUT WORKING THERE ANYMORE.
RETAIL IS LIKE THAT!
GO WORK FOR WAL-MART or another store AS A NIGHT STOCKER AND THAT WAY, YOU WILL BE BUSY, WON'T SEE MANY CUSTOMERS AND STILL GET YOUR RETAIL FIX.

I feel really really bad for you! Especially if your working through the holidays there!! They ALL become hitlers! And when did Carla leave?! That's some BS right there, she was my favorite! I do like J too downstairs, she's always been nice to me! So now you have a new manager?! That blows! It seems like they've been hiring all the Sh***y managers to make the employees miserable on purpose just so they can get what they want! (credit apps and suck-ups). I left right after the holidays because I saw the crazy side of all my managers and couldn't handle it anymore because I WASNT a suck-up..poor me. lol. I think you should write to the Squires! I'm sure if you got a group of people together to do it, it'd work! Good luck!
And the 2nd floor dungeon is cosmetics!! DONT EVER EVER EVER try to work there. It is a prison cell and I'm suprised the managers don't have real whips when they drive their poor slaves to emotional turmoil!

Yea, I would never want to work in cosmetics. Not many people seem to like it. We have a MAC counter now, and those girls are ridiculous. They all look like clowns. What counter did you work at?

I DO NOT SHOP AT DILLARDS BECAUSE THEY MISTREATED MY MOTHER HERE IN AUSTIN,TEXAS..THEY ACCUSED HER OF BEING A GYPSY AND SHE IS NATIVE AMERICAN.
AT ANOTHER DILLARDS, THEY OVERCHARGED ME SO I WALKED OUT AND LEFT IT RIGHT THERE ON THE COUNTER.
THEY HAD SHODDY MERCHANDISE AND OUTRAGEOUSLY HIGH PRICES.
AND THE RUDEST SALES PEOPLE THIS SIDE OF THE PLANET.
NOW I KNOW WHY THEY ARE SO RUDE --BECAUSE THEY ARE BEING TREATED LIKE **** BY THEIR EMPLOYER SO THEY TAKE IT OUT ON THE CUSTOMERS.
HELLO, CORPORATE? PAYING ATTENTION. YOU WOULD SELL MORE IF YOU TREATED YOUR EMPLOYEES BETTER...
BUT THEY DON'T CARE. RETAIL IS ALL ABOUT MAKING MONEY AND NOT ABOUT MAXIMIZING PROFIT OPPORTUNITIES. THEY ALWAYS GO ON THE CHEAP AND FOR WHAT THEY CAN MAKE IN THE MOMENT AND NOT ALWAYS THINK ABOUT THE BIG PICTURE AND THE LONG TERM WHICH I FEEL IS WHAT IS WRONG WITH AMERICAN BUSINESS TODAY.
IT'S A LOT LIKE THE OLD CARPETBAGGER PHILOSOPHY DURING THE RECONSTRUCTION AFTER THE CIVIL WAR. tHEY ACME AND SET UP SHOP, GRABBED ALL THE PROFITS THAT THEY COULD AND THEN THEY WENT ON TO GOUGE OTHERS IN OTHER LOCATIONS.
I THINK A LOT OF RETAIL GOUGES WHAT THEY CAN AND THAT IS ALL THEY CARE ABOUT --THE SHORT TERM.
STANLEY MARCUS TRAINED HIS EMPLOYEES AND NIEMAN-MARCUS GOT ON THE MAP OF SUPERSTAR RETAILERS. THERE WAS A STORE NAMED SAKOWITZ IN HOUSTON THAT WAS CLOSE. NOW NIEMAN'S IS OWNED BY SOME CHAIN THAT COULD CARE LESS BUT STANLY MARCUS HAD THE RIGHT IDEA.
DILLARD'S BY COMPARISON IS RATHER PETTY AND PATHETIC AND I DON'T SHOP THERE AND NOBODY IN MY FAMILY SHOPS THERE AND IF THEY SURVIVE THIS ECONOMIC DEPRESSION, I WILL BE SURPRISED.

Diilard's needs to be stopped! They are known for abusing their employees. Its not a store thing, its company wide.
Most of the management & senior management are not even qualified to be in their postion. No wonder why the company is such a mess! It's amazing to me that they have survived this long.

I have worked at Dillards for about a year and a half. And in that time, there have been more changes than I would like to count. It all started when the coorperate manager was demoted and was replaces with a bitter man. After that, our store manager had a melt down and was placed under doctor supervision, I believe for stress related issues. After about a mounth, he was terminated, along with his assistant, one of the mens' asm (store manager), womens' asm, cosmetics' asm, furnature asm, accessory asm, one of the visual personel, human resources person, womens' assistant, along with more than a handful of employess, not to mention some people were demoted. I have no idea what the new store manager is thinking, but I feel like things are only going to get worse as the time goes by.
This new store manager has been described as "the cleaner". Meaning that he is sent to different stores just to fire people. Isn't that insane!! He won't even look at you when he walks by. He has made several changes that we don't even know if they are within policy. He has cut full time employees hours to part time hours, and has put those full time employees in danger of losing their healthcare benefits. People who have been terminated aren't getting paid their vacation hours, having a hard time getting unemployment, and all because of this man. He and his manager both work open to close and are constantly watching us from the camera room. We are the enemies to them, the bad guys. I have done nothing but work my butt of, as well as sveral other employees, and for what, NOTHING!!!
Now all we do is wait for our judgement days as I like to call them. We wait to get fired so that we can move on with our lives. Dillards has been a draining experience, at least for me. I just can't understand how someone can get away with something like this. It is just like being abused, but with no physical evidence. I do not know how much longer I can take this, but I do know that they will someday go through the horror that they have put us through and I would like to hope that they would think of each and every person that they have fired. And how many lives they have affected.
I will continue to see if there is anything else I can do to help the good peolpe who still work there and so we can some how get the old Dillards back!!

I worked for Dillard's way back in 1978, at one of the original stores. We moved the old store to the new mall that same year. At the time, they had department heads. Needless to say, I never made as much as the other dept. heads. I was eventually fired after 2 1/2 years for "not making my quota"
Okay, so a couple of years later, in 1983, I started working at Kmart. I started out part-time, as everyone did. What a difference! No quotas! I was their number 1 announcer on the PA system. We got a raise every 6 months, no questions, no begging, just a flat little raise every 6 months that would show up on my check. Had good benefits, lot's better than Dillard's. Needless to say, when I left Kmart, it wasn't because of being treated unfairly. They did everything they could to accomodate me while I was there.
I remember while I was at Dillard's how the employees would make fun of Kmart and blue light specials, how they were so "low classed". Well, I was a lot happier at Kmart than I ever was at Dillard's! I was treated as an equal.
As far as I'm concerned, it's not how the package is wrapped, but what is in the package!!!
