I just cannot believe what happened to me Dec. 5, 2007. I had been working for walgreens for over three years. this day I was working in my dept. as a photo tech. it was very busy and I was stressed trying to get all the orders taken care of. Well, an individual came up to me and asked for the office door lock combination. I did not recognize the person and quickly asked, "who are you?" He stated that he was the district manager. at that point I said Oh, and went over to the door and opened it for him. he did not say thank you, but just past me and into the office.

I could tell by his body language that perhaps his feelings were hurt simply because I did not recognize him. the loss prevention manager was in the office, a person I have known since being with the company and I had already greeted him at the start of my shift. The following events happened so fast that there is no question that I was being set up by the district manager. I was changing a four inch roll of paper when my store manger came up to me and said, when your are done with that, Dave needs to speak with you in the office. I asked him what for, did I do something wrong, and he said he did not know.

I went into the office and greeted the lost prevention mgr. he said to me that there was concerns that someone is stealing pm's. he said that they only had concerns and no one has made any formal complaints. he showed me no proof and he offered no proof. I am an honest person and was upset by the very fact that I was called into the office in the first place. By the way the questioning was going I felt he was accusing me of being the one stealing.

I inadvertantly brought up a situation that occured between another employee and I, namely the sims coordinator, who took in two photo orders. well I was already emotionally upset with her because of an argument that she and I had a couple of days earlier, and in the heat of the moment I did cancel those two orders and put them in my name. But as I explained that that is not stealing, because she had no right to take in the orders, since I was in the store and all she had to do was call me. But, again, he had no other proof whatsoever, but instead used that information that I inadvertantly shared with him and used that as a means to fire me. But, I am certain that this whole incident occured simply because the district manager was hurt because I did not recognize him.

Honestly...

AUTHOR: Fathergod - Libertyville (U.S.A.)

Since Loss Prevention was already there and the district manager came into the store, most likely you were going to be suspended or terminated unless you showed proof that you were the one not stealing. Also, if you read your contract you signed, you will realize that employment with Walgreens is AS IS. Meaning you have the right to resign and they have the right to fire you if they have reasonable cause at ANY time.

I was also fired , for theft of merchandise (trial size scope bottles) without proof

AUTHOR: Ashley - Manchester (U.S.A.)

Does that still give them the right to put that they you are being fired for theft of merchandise, without proof. The same thing Happened to me in the Hooksett NH store. As I have been investigating, Walgreens is known for accusing their employees without any proof and then firing them and putting them on a do not hire list. This is ridiculous!!! What ever happened to being innocent until proven guilty. They don't even give you a chance. They don't even show you proof or anything. They tell you they have proof but don't show it. In my case they didn't even prosecute. HELLO, that is because they had no evidence. I didn't steal and now I can't even get a job. I am trying to support myself and my 6 month old son by myself. Do they have a right to ruin peoples' lives without proof???

Indeed

To the above poster:

Yes, if you are in a right to work state, than they can fire you for any reason. They don't need to provide proof of theft unless they intend on prosecuting you.

That would be like me accusing an individual (WALGREENS HOOKSETT NH POOR MANAGEMENT)

AUTHOR: Ashley - Manchester (U.S.A.)

That doesn't make sense. I just don't get it! That would be like me saying Mr. John Doe stole from me (just because I wanted to be spiteful or set him up) and then what I said was taken for fact without proof. Then Mr. John Doe had a black mark on his record that he carried around with for 7 years and couldn't get a job. I, as an individual would never get away with this, but apparently Walgreens can. How can this honestly happen? Is this actually the United states? And now I have to go to try to get state assistance because I can't even get a job. I am a very proud person. This is very hard for me. How do you tax payers feel about paying for me getting assistance? Just remember, this is because WALGREENS is able to fire and accuse you for stealing without proof, thus making it almost impossible for you to get a job in retail when that is the only work skill you have. Walgreens' upper management taxes should be increased since they are the ones putting individuals in this predictment, and no reprucussion coming from it. We need to have these laws changed!!!

They aren't stopping you

AUTHOR: Ashley - Springfield (U.S.A.)

They aren't stopping you from getting another job. They cannot discuss the terms of your dismissal with outside companies legally in most states.

The only thing walgreens can tell a perspective employer is that you were terminated, and that you are not rehireable. That's it.

Have you been told by new employers that they are being told you were stealing?

Also, there is a big difference between you accusing someone stealing. The difference is, if you accuse someone of stealing it only matters if you take them to court. Walgreens does not need any evidence unless they wish to take you to court. You aren't being fined for this, you aren't being arrested for theft, they are going after you legally in any way.

Just go get another job.

Stealing from your SIMS Coordinator...

AUTHOR: Wagmgr - Beaverton (U.S.A.)

Based on everything I read in your statement, Walgreens was well within their rights to terminate you.  Your interaction with the District Manager was completely irrelevant to the entire proceedings, in fact it may have even been part of the DM's visit.

For those of you not aware of Walgreen's photo pay schedule, the majority of an employee's earnings are their hourly wages.  In addition to that, employees can also earn additional monies for any orders that they take in on photo orders containing promotional items.  The promotional monies go to the employee who took the order in.  You admitted yourself that you canceled the orders, thus taking away money that would have been earned in the SIMS coordinator's paycheck.  You then resubmitted the orders under your own name.  Would you like to explain how taking money from another employee's paycheck and adding it to your own is NOT stealing?

Just because you were working at the time does not mean you are entitled to every single cent of PM that walks through the door.  Every photo employee must abide to an ethical code of conduct.  You broke that code of conduct when you fraudulently took another employee's monies that she had earned, and claimed them for yourself.

Clearly it is too late for you to learn this lesson as an employee of Walgreens, but for any other employees who may be reading; if you are encountering difficulties working with another member of the staff, or feel like you should have gotten PMs that were earned by another employee, talk to an assistant or a store manager.  They can evaluate the situation from a less-biased perspective and can recommend a solution to you, or can try to implement one themselves.  Taking matters into your own hands, particularly when it involves co-workers paychecks, is a risky way to go, as Peter learned here.

Will Walgreens fire me for this?

AUTHOR: ShannonLS - (USA)

I work at Walgreens and today was just a bad day. We are supposed to ID people when they buy cough medicines because of one of the ingredients. This supposed Lawyer from Illinois came in and bought some. We are Wisconsin. When I asked for ID, she said "Im not giving it to you. I don't legally have to". I told her "I'm supposed to, it's my job, it's what I've been trained to do, I can get fired and a fine for not doing so" She says "I'm a lawyer. In Illinois we don't have to do this. I don't legally have to" I told her "You're not in Illinois. You're in Wisconsin. We have different laws here" She then demanded to speak to the manager to get all kinds of higher ups numbers, all over an ID, and proceeded to give me a hard time for doing my job. She did eventually buy it after the manager, in an attempt to just shut her up, told me to just enter in a birth date. I did, and then said "I hope you have a better day. Thanks for giving the cashier a hard time for doing her job". She apparently found it offensive that I was human. She made such a fuss the whole store was looking at her and laughing, and the ones in line saying "it's just an ID, what does she have to hide?". Afterwards, the manager pulls me into the office and says "What did you say to her? Tell me exactly" I told him exactly what I said. He says "Did you tell her she must be high on something?" Of course not, so I told him "No way. She obviously wasn't. I thought to myself she was out of line, yeah, but I never told her she was high or anything. I did "thank" her for giving me a hard time for doing what I was told to do" Could I get fired because of her fuss and threat to take legal action? I've been completely upset, because I do work in a bad neighborhood, and have to put up with this kind of stuff all the time. A few nights ago I had my life almost end, and it was like no big deal. A crazy addict high on crack came in waving a razor toward me, and I had ben at my register all night and hadn't even checked her out nor communicated with her. Just some crazy from the street. I'm also 3 months pregnant. Any help? Advice? Comfort? Something to help me get some sleep for my job so I know what to expect?
