Good day,

I am currently unemployed and answered an advertisement online for a work-from-home position as a bookkeeper for a computer peripherals company. The reply-to email address was Sharon.Nick28@Yahoo.com. After emailing them my résumé, I received an IM from Sharon.Nick28 interviewing me for the position. The interview seemed to go well and I was pressed to open a checking and savings account to receive direct deposit of my salary from the company. I told Sharon.Nick28 that I'd open the account after the holiday and needed to check out a few things first.

Today, still not having opened the account, I was contacted by Sharon.Nick28 (IM text below).

sharon.nick28 (1/5/2009 8:05:40 AM): Hello you there??
sharon.nick28 (1/5/2009 8:05:41 AM):
Ruthie (1/5/2009 10:24:41 AM): Hi.
sharon.nick28 (1/5/2009 10:24:57 AM): how are you doing?
Ruthie (1/5/2009 10:25:18 AM): Fine, yourself?
Ruthie (1/5/2009 10:28:05 AM): Hello.
sharon.nick28 (1/5/2009 10:30:24 AM): am here?
Ruthie (1/5/2009 10:30:39 AM): I here, U?
sharon.nick28 (1/5/2009 10:31:34 AM): okay
sharon.nick28 (1/5/2009 10:31:42 AM): so have you set up the account?
Ruthie (1/5/2009 10:32:29 AM): Was called away unexpectedly this weekend. Will be back tonight, so no account yet.
sharon.nick28 (1/5/2009 10:32:54 AM): okay
sharon.nick28 (1/5/2009 10:33:13 AM): once you have it set up Email me with the account information okay
Ruthie (1/5/2009 10:33:53 AM): To ? And what's your address, phone, etc.?
sharon.nick28 (1/5/2009 10:34:16 AM): Email it to my Email
sharon.nick28 (1/5/2009 10:34:27 AM): sharon.nick28@yahoo.com
Ruthie (1/5/2009 10:34:46 AM): And what's your address, phone, etc.?
sharon.nick28 (1/5/2009 10:36:14 AM): i will provide you will that okay
Ruthie (1/5/2009 10:36:32 AM): Fine. What is it?
sharon.nick28 (1/5/2009 10:38:17 AM): Address: 1492 Eatonton Rd Ste H Madison, GA 30650
Ruthie (1/5/2009 10:39:58 AM): Thanks!

I signed off, looked up the address given, and found a phone number. Upon calling the Radio Shack at that location, I was told no one knew Sharon.Nick28. I called Yahoo Customer Care to report this and was directed to their site where I reported this scammer. I'm also reporting this to the online job site where I found the advertisement.

I was to have a deposit made to my new accounts I was to open, remove part of that deposit as a "Starting Bonus", and send the rest of the deposit to someone to buy accounting software required by the position. I have had a narrow escape of becoming a statistic of those defrauded by scam artists. I have not escaped having my job search interrupted by these foul people. The time I've invested in pursuing this putative position could have been better spent elsewhere.

I've asked Yahoo to please disable Sharon.Nick28@Yahoo.com before someone else wastes more than their time.

Sincerely and a bit more cynical now,

Ruthie

Computer Essentials is Legitimate - The email address is not and no Data Entry jobs exist!

AUTHOR: Owner Of Computer Essentials - Bangor (U.S.A.)

Alert:

I am one of the owners of Computer Essentials in Bangor, Maine and felt compelled to write in about this report. After some research not only did we find this report on the fraudulent email as posted by Ruthie but we have received multiple calls in the last few weeks. At the store, several people have inquired about the job position, which by the way, does NOT EXIST. Our name is being used without permission or sanctioning in any way.

Computer Essentials (http://www.cebangor.com) is a legitimate family owned computer sales and service retail business located in Bangor Maine. We have been in business for 9 years and have a good reputation for helping people and it is now being smeared with some unscrupulous crook trying to scam innocent people. This is not acceptable.

I wanted to warn anyone receiving this type of email, regardless of the company listed, to use caution as it is so easy to seem legitimate via an email or website but you never really know unless you do some research. Even then it is not a certainty. You should do a search BEFORE you respond to these type of emails for the company name, their website, their listed phone number, etc. to try to minimize being scammed. Fortunately you did and it saved you. Many times these searches will be quite enlightening. If someone starts asking for personal information, social security numbers or bank account information....let that be a red flag!

I would like to say thanks to Ruthie for taking the time to post this report so that others may avoid being tricked into wasting their time and efforts or worse...actually being scammed. I would be interested, Ruthie, in receiving any pertinent information in regards to this scam such as what site the advertisement was on you signed up for. You can find our website listed above where you could contact us if you would like. I hope you also reported her IM address

I am currently actively pursuing information on this and if it should become possible to find the person or persons responsible you can bet we would prosecute to the maximum extent of the law!! We have also posted a warning on our website that the job is a fake and have a link to this report. Unfortunately in today's digital world it is fairly easy to become anonymous but through email headers and ISP server records it sometimes can be traced. Wish us luck.

Thanks also goes to this site for their public service against the "Bad Guys". The consumer needs more sites like this. I have used it a few times to check on questionable companies and it definitely averted me from using at least one after seeing some reports here.

Computer Essentials for all your computer essentials!! Stay safe out there!!

A BIG Thanx to Ruthie in Boise Idaho

AUTHOR: Steen - Phoenix (U.S.A.)

I just wanted to say a Big Thanks to Ruthie in Boise Idaho for filing and reporting about her experience with Sharon.Nick28@yahoo.com! I just fell for the same thing from this person except now they are using the email sharon.nick66@yahoo.com. I saw an ad for a Data Entry position/part-time working from home. How great I thought since I am an unemployed Stay at home Mom with a medical condition. I figured this would be great while the kids were at school I could earn some money so my husband was always breaking his back to try to make ends meet for us. I came across an ad and I applied for it, sending my resume! (BIG MISTAKE) the good news is I happen to tell my parents about it since they have been helping us out from time to time.. My dad being the cautious blood hound that he is, decided to look into this. (I was to have my IM interview today) While researching he came across your report with the same information!!!! Although I do need to look into what I need to do now since my resume stated my name and address on it.. but you saved me from what could've been the biggest mistake of my life!!! If you can, I would like to know what you have done and what I can do to make sure my identity is safe!!!

Thanks Again Ruthie!!!

C.C. in AZ!!!
