The Frightmare Haunted House Possibly the worst volunteer experience of my life, in fact it almost ruined Halloween for me entirely. Raleigh, North Carolina

I volunteered with Frightmare in the Halloween season of 2007. I couldn't possibly put into words how dissatisfied I was with the experience. As for those of you assuming that the "donations for volunteers" bucket was a scam, I'd just like to say that we WERE in fact volunteers, and the only money that we made came from the generosity of those who attended (but who can blame anyone if they didn't want to donate, the entire set was poorly assembled, too-well lit to be even remotely scary, not to mention the price of admittance was absolutely absurd, etc.); while I'm at it, at the end of the month and a half worth's of work that me and every other volunteer exerted we each only got a meager 22-ish dollars, mostly in change and singles, so where did the rest of our hard-earned money get off to? Probably into the pockets of the owners.

Also, most of the volunteers (including myself at the time) were in high school, and our participation in the haunted house, and the many late nights that we spent trying to entertain boozed up rednecks from the bar next door normally resulted in a lack of attendance to school, declining grades, substance abuse, you name the vice, it probably went down at Frightmare. Some volunteers even quit their normal jobs with the hope that this could be a unique and rewarding experience, and it turned out to be the complete opposite for me, and I'm sure for many of the others as well.

For my entire life, Halloween has always been my most favorite and cherished holiday. I've spent a lot of time in various "haunts" across NC and bordering states, and the fact that I was one of the actors in the Frightmare at the time couldn't even stop me from realizing that it was probably the worst haunt I have ever experienced. I was so embarrassed by the fact that I worked there that I even told many of my friends and family members to avoid it at all costs. It simply is not worth the money. Before I began working there I was warned by some previous volunteers to "not trust [cast manager's name]" and after it was all through I wished that I had heeded that warning before going through the awful experience.

If you want to go to a quality NC haunted house, I would recommend The Hollywood Horror Show in Snow Camp.

#1 Consumer Suggestion

Should have paid more attention in school

AUTHOR: Flynrider - Phoeix (U.S.A.)

"I'd just like to say that we WERE in fact volunteers"

In that case, why would you expect to get paid anything? I don't get the point of your ripoff report. Either you're a volunteer or you're working for pay.

"so where did the rest of our hard-earned money get off to?"

You appear to be confused about what a volunteer position pays. In the future, if you're expecting "hard earned money" I recommend that you do not take any job that carries the title "volunteer".

Help us out here..

Why are you posting this 2 Years later.  If I was to play Devils Advocate I would think that you are trying to actually trying to drum up support for the other Haunted House you mentioned.  As some of the statements you made, make absolutely no sense.  Just a couple that stand out.

First a volunteer by definition is GIVING their time and/or services and not getting paid.  If your motivation to participate in the Haunted House was money, I can see why the Haunted House may not have been that great.  In college I was involved in and knew several other people who volunteered in various Haunted Houses.  There were a couple who loved doing it so much, if they were told they would have to pay to participate the first words out of their mouth would have been "will cash be okay".

Also, anyone who would quit their "normal" job to volunteer in a Haunted House for a month, probably needs to re-think their priorities.

At the very least if there is a RipOff it may be with the NC Education System.

In response to both rebuttals

AUTHOR: thinklikemtn - cary (USA)

a) We were Paid Volunteers. We were guaranteed, based on the results of previous years, that we would receive considerably more than 20 dollars for a month-and-a-half's worth of work. Are we really going to argue about terminology?

b) I'm posting this now for two reasons: 1. because I only recently found this website, and 2. because this haunted house is still in operation.

Stop being ridiculous.

Really now...

AUTHOR: Ashes2ashes - (United States of America)

I am working for The Frightmare, you are told you get tips based on how many customers come in and tip. The company does not pay you, the Customers do. If you do a good job and they feel as if you should get a tip you will get tips.

Also you got 22 dollars based on how much you worked as well, if you showed up for two days you get a cut of tips for two days of work. And if you were doing drugs or drinking, missing school, and quit your real job... thats your own fault not The Frightmares.

I was told not only was the year you worked very slow, but also you only worked a few days. I am working there now, I have yet to get my tips, but I will tell you I enjoy scaring people for the heck of it, not for the money. Money is good dont get me wrong, I need what I get, but just to say hey I scare people for fun is pretty Bad A$$!

I think you need to get a real job, stop trying to bring people down because you didnt get along, and grow up. Return to this site when you have a real rip off.

Paid volunteer?

AUTHOR: Robert - Irvine (U.S.A.)

What has the world come to when even the volunteers don't think they earn enough.

As stated before, if your motivation was money on a job that was basically volunteer then perhaps you were not the best fit for this Haunted House.  If anyone suffered a lack of attendance in school, substance abuse, or quiting their regular job to work for 1.5 months in a Haunted House probably have other issues that are no fault of the Haunted House.

As to your "Stop being ridiculous" comment, I suggest you look in a mirror and state that again.
