I have been working at Fry's for almost a year now, started in mid-November, 2008.  I designated I wanted a full-time job when I applied.  I have been scheduled to work full-time hours less than five times in my fifty weeks of employment.  Our store is always busy and the grocery/dairy department where I work is constantly understaffed.  Management always expects the impossible for the amount of hours scheduled for our department.  I typically have been scheduled to work anywhere from 12-25 hours per week and that is not enough to live on.  I have talked to management about picking up more hours in another part of the store and have gotten nothing but excuses.  During the summer I was told hours would increase at the end of August, when ASU students and snowbirds started returning to town.  That was revised to be sometime in September, then it changed to sometime in October.  It is now nearly November and I'm still waiting for more hours.  I know that the bare-bones scheduling has everything to do with management receiving bigger bonuses at the end of the year for keeping labor costs down.  Still, all that we the employees hear is "the customer is #1", I'm sick of hearing it.  The management is so inept at my store that an employee who left three weeks previously was placed on the schedule by a dim-wit manager, placing a bigger workload on the rest of us.  I went in to pick up my check and check my schedule yesterday and discovered that I was scheduled to work only 20 hours in the coming week.  Two new employees in my department, hired just three weeks ago were both scheduled for 37 hours.  I have filed a grievance with the union but I don't expect anything to come of it because I truly believe the union exists just to collect their $42 monthly dues.

So, Have you earned your increase in hours? Where I work only the eager beavers get the step up. People who work here part time stay part time unless managment feels they are worth full time hours with the increase in benifits and hourly rate. The union I work with can only get someone on full time if the manager oopses and sceduals them full time 4 weeks straight. It only takes 1 in four at less than full time ( 1 hr less) on one week and the union can't fource anything like a full time position. Usually if the boss won't "promote" to full time it means he relly doesn't want you and he hasn't found a way to fire you yet.
