The owner at Yaghi's Pizzeria runs his business with an iron fist. I am all for hard-work, dedication, and commitment to excellent quality but he has gone too far. He overworks his teenage employee pool.
Teenagers who work there often work Fri nights, and 12 hour shifts on Saturday and Sunday. This leaves no room for the kids to get their homework done. The owner also makes his employees work 12 hour shifts with no break, which is against the law. During the down times in the shift, the delivery personnel is not allowed to text, do homework, or read while waiting on the next order.
I understand company policy. What I don't understand is the absolute denial of federal law. If the owner of Yaghis Pizza is not willing to abide by federal law, then perhaps he will have to be turned in to the authorities.

There is no Federal Law mandating breaks. Some states (California as an example) have state laws covering this. If you call the Department of Labor, the recorded greeting even tells you this.
An employer not wanting employees to surf the 'net or text during "down times" is absolutely within his rights. Truthfully, there is ALWAYS something to be done whether it is cleaning, stocking, assisting others, etc.....
Depending on the teenagers ages, there are some statutes covering how many hours they can work, when,. etc... but that is usually for teens under 16.
So it sounds like the employer is doing everything by the book. Where's the ripoff? Is any one forcing anyone to work there?

Many of those kids that continue to work there will be excellent employees later on in life. They will be successful in their education and business careers. Most teenagers today aren't worth jacks**t as employees. I know, I've hired a few. Gave my nephew his first job at 17 last year and trained him right. He got a great job this year, earning top dollar, 32 hrs per week, WORKING WEEKENDS ONLY. There's a chain BBQ place here in town that has a reputation for working the butts off of it's teenage employees. They pay $9 per hour PLUS benefits, STARTING. IF a teenager has a good work history working there, they are prime pickings for many other companies hiring management material here in town BECAUSE of their work experience there. They were trained right. So maybe this guy is doing them a favor. Those who CAN hack it will look back at their time there and think they learned something and those who can't will continue to whine throughout their lives. I see it every day in adults.
