Shopped at American Freight, picked out a sectional that my wife and I wanted. I was told that the sectional I was looking at on the floor of the showroom/warehouse was the one I was buying. I bought the fabric guard (or whatever it was called) and was told that it would take a week to have it applied. I put $200 cash down on the purchase and was told that I would receive a call in a week when the fabric protection was done.

A week went by, and I called. I was told that my sectional was "not in yet". I replied that I was told when I placed the deposit that the sectional I was buying was the one I was looking at on the floor, and I would have to wait a week for the fabric protection to be applied. The person I spoke with then informed me that they NEVER sold anything off the floor and the salesperson I spoke to would not have told me that, and that I was mistaken. The lady then said that my furniture should arrive in about a week.

Another week went by, and I called. It was not in yet. The next week, I went to the store, and was told it was not in yet. I then asked for my deposit back. I was told that my deposit was truly a lay-away, and that their policy is not to give refunds for lay-away, and since I hadn't made a "timely" payment, my layaway was cancelled. I again asked for my money back, and was told again that they did not give refunds, but I could pay the balance and they would "order" my furniture in.

Obviously, they had no intention of giving me my furniture, just taking my money.

$200 lessons learned:

1. American Freight is a rip-off
2. Crooks run American Freight

I'd never been lied to and ripped off by a company like this before. I was truly shocked when I was told that I couldn't get my money back - but if I pay the remaining balance they would "order" my furniture???

No furniture, and $200 less cash.

So, Obviously, they don't extend credit. They use lay-a-way. I'll agree, the sales person should not have told you that you would get the furniture from the floor. I wouldn't want that furniture. Do you have any idea what kind of people sit on show room furniture? Neither do I and that's what scares me. Now for my point. You only paid $200 and that wasn't the full price. How do you expect them to give you a piece of anything that's not paid for? Would you give something pricey like that to a perfect stranger without some sort of line of credit or loan? I doubt it. That's how the business looks at it. As for your 'deposit', you should have gotten something in writing stating it was a refundable deposit. They would have been all about NOT taking your money in the first place if you would have asked for a contract with the terms of a deposit now and payments later.

We Care about our Customers***** This would Never Happen!!!!

AUTHOR: Gigi - Fort Wayne (U.S.A.)

If someone picked out furntiure and put a deposit down, we would not fabric protect a set unless it was paid in full to begin with. We offer free layaway, and you must send in a registration form within 5 days of a set being fabric protected and receiving it in your home, so this would have never happened. Another point this customer made was that it takes a WEEK to fabric protect furniture, that also is untrue and would have never happened as we do it while the customer waits. I am appalled someone would blatantly lie. I would appreciate this customer having to show proof of the above complaints even happened.

Also, if you are in a layaway situation with our company, we are not a bank or savings account where you can just withdraw money, If you change your mind on receiving your furniture within a 10 day period, you are entitled to a full refund. If after 10 days you should change your mind for what ever reason, we will offer you a store credit. you never loose your money! I would like this person to call me or stop in anytime for a full discussion on this matter. I never let a customer go unsatisfied it at all possible. We do care about all customer comments and/or complaints. Thank you for allowing me the opportunity to speak on this matter.
